When a new pastor or priest is assigned to your parish, do you see a lot of new faces in the pews? Do you notice significant changes?

There are always a few people, often women, throwing themselves at the priest. Generally not in a romantic or sexual way, but they sure want his attention. It’s actually caused me to stay more distant from priests, the same way I stay distant from a lot of entertainers who have “groupies”.

At my local parish the groupies are old ladies whom even the priests are a groupie of or…I doubt they dare contradict them. It is funny though I don’t mean this in a mean way. A new priest goes unnoticed. Old priests are prefred in EO. The priests with groupies are usually old and they have a white beard santa must envy. Younger people prefer old priests (me too) because they have seen a lot and know things even if they suspect all of us to on FB and have had at least one abortion if we are women. It is ok though. The mysticism covers for it all.

We had seen a number of folks in our daily travels who seem to make a 20+ mile pilgirmage just to attend at our parish as the pastor had been formerly assigned to a parish in that town.

Another instance comes to mind of a number of folks at Mass saying “God” more than usual–in place of certain male pronouns. Even completing a catchphrase that the new pastor is keen to employ during a homily.

Sadly, yes.

I’ve been through three pastors at my current parish, and I’ve seen the people come and go with each change. Each pastor has been so completely different from each other, and people compare, and there are so many parishes to choose from in the area.

It’s weird seeing this from the choir loft – so many people always sit in the same place, so that even if I don’t know them, I can see empty places and see new families.

We had lots of new faces in pews for our current Pastor’s first Mass with us. Many of his former parishioners had journeyed out to our parish to support him as he transitioned. It is a change to move to a new parish and meet the souls entrusted to one’s care for the first time. He acknowledged their presence at the end of Mass and it provided a wonderful bridge from old to new.
I wouldn’t call them groupies; that is disparaging. Rather, they showed their love in a special way and helped us to welcome our new pastor.
When a previous pastor who had moved on to a different parish retired, I journeyed down to his retirement party to wish him well and tell him how much I appreciated him. I had witnessed his service to the needy and the dying and was very much affected by his constancy and commitment to his flock. We are blessed in our priests. May God bless them always.
Amen.

I remember last year - our Psator -
I think he’s an ex Navy seal - Military investigator - etc
A great guy - a ball of fire - somewhat stern and tough -
I’m not sure how God called him - but here he is - Pastor !
I hear he’s going to be relocated - but people like him -
After one mass - people gathered all about him -
Like school kids around a soccer ball -
And he kissed many women on the cheek ( good looking too )
And many hugs and hand shakes.
When I first showed up to the church, he didn’t like me that much - lol
I kept sitting closer and closer, month after month -
He’s a man on the go -
So now when he sees me - he lights up like a Christmas tree - says “ hey bro “ !

Many ways - lol
I’m more of a free spirit - he’s a ridged take orders guy.
His facial feature too…once when behind the altar…and he saw me in the pew…
I felt bad for him then -

I remember he saw me sitting in the 5th row…
( and I love and value every single mass I can get to )
he looked out at the people…and asked them…
“ why do you sit so far away…move forward…please “
No one did.
Month after month - no one budges.

When I was a teen we had a priest come to our parish who had groupies, and when he was moved to another parish a number of people left our parish to attend church at his new one. I mean there are always some priests who are more popular and all have their set of firm supporters but this was way beyond that.

He had a very distinct style and manner and there was a great deal of fawning and also controversy around him. He was also the youth group leader and had a crowd of teens that literally followed him around and sang his praises.

I found it an uncomfortable situation, and not my style, but I don’t know that anyone was at fault, but I know it caused a great deal of tension in the parish and in the area and lots of strong words were said on both sides of the issue.

I sometimes feel obligated - to the Priest - to do my best.
It’s a small form of encouragement towards him, I know.
If a Priest is shaking hands after mass - I will try to shake hands with him…
Or if he’s busy with people, smile and give the thumbs up.
I love - a good Priest !

I notice a lot of grumbling.

We had one new Priest in out city, two years ago who received a credible death threat because one of his parishioners wanted the old priest to return. The FBI were called in. It made the news.

It was interesting. On Friday morning the Priest started mass by explaining that there was a death threat and that anyone who wanted to should leave the service. No one did to their credit. I admired the Priest for not backing down.

Of course, the parishioners also had a petition with a hundred signatories to bring the old priest back.

I used to go there on Friday when my Parish did not hold mass. Personally, I preferred the new Priest to the old one.

I guess there is no accounting for taste.

Our Parish is staffed by Franciscans. Every four years they are moved to new parishes. That means we get that “new Priest” vibe often. In my experience, most people genuinely want to get to know him and ensure that he feels welcome. There are a few “groupies” but I have found that they are usually seeking him out because they are experiencing a spiritual problem.
