Patriarch Gregory II Youssef of Melkite catholic church

I noticed a statement concerning Patriarch Gregory II Youssef of Melkite catholic church as follows:
He earned the enmity of Pope Pius IX for this; during his next visit to the pontiff Gregory was cast to the floor at Pius’ feet by the papal guard and the pope placed his foot on the patriarch’s head.

“He paid for his assertion: During Vatican II, Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch Maximos IV revealed that Pope Pius IX humiliated the patriarch, having him cast to the ground by members of the Swiss Guard and then addressing the patriarch with his foot pressed against his head. But Gregory’s defense of the Eastern Christian tradition is cited as the main influence behind the landmark apostolic letter, “Orientalium Dignitas Ecclesiarum,” issued in 1894 by Pius’s successor, Pope Leo XIII.”

Later popes, and Vatican II, have altered the dynamic.

Keep in mind also the nature of his reign. … troubled by rebels and nationalists.

I do understand that and the time but it greatly disappoints me to see these historical Popes so unlike Christ.

We mustn’t let ourselves be troubled by the sinfulness of those to whom Christ has entrusted authority…they, like all men, exercise freewill and can abuse the gifts Christ has given them. Think of Judas, whom the Lord handpicked as an apostle!

In John 11 we read:
49 And one of them, Caiphas, who held the high priesthood in that year,[c] said to them, You have no perception at all; 50 you do not reflect that it is best for us if one man is put to death for the sake of the people, to save a whole nation from destruction. 51 It was not of his own impulse that he said this; holding the high priesthood as he did in that year, he was able to prophesy that Jesus was to die for the sake of the nation…

Caiphas condemned Our Lord to death, yet he still spoke by the Spirit because he lawfully exercised the high priesthood instituted by Christ.

Oh dear…don’t read any history. Pio IX may well have been a bit unhinged, too. Try reading about him and Edgardo Mortara for a real chilling vignette.
 
I think he probably was one of the worst Popes, with his very negative attitudes towards Eastern patriarchs, especially those who most definitely rejected Ineffabilis Deus such as the Melkite and Chaldean patriarchs (Mar Yowsip VI Audo is one of my favorite troublemakers in our history :D) The Patriarchs did not agree to the clearly new doctrine of the church, as many Eastern faithful still do not today, and they only wanted their rights and autonomy to be left alone. He basically tried to control everything, and they were the only ones who opposed him, yet unfortunately failed to succeed.

Defense of this pope is really unfathomable in my opinion. For his bolstering of his power and position, and for his intense repression of the Eastern churches. It’s really surprising we stayed in communion with the Roman Catholic church while he was in charge. Can’t really fathom why he was beatified at all.

There were far, far worse popes, you just need to read more. 😉 I do agree that Pope Pius IX’s actions were really bad. 🙂

It’s more than that. Every pope sins, but not every pope does something like that. It shows the evil fruits of the unbalanced role which the papacy came to play in the western church. It needs to be acknowledged and repudiated (and it has been, somewhat).
