What is the significance of the title Patriarch of the West?

As many know by now the Pope has dropped the title from his official list of acclamations. Does this mean he no longer sees his office as a Patriarchate, or does it mean he still does see himself as such but he is just retiring the term as redundant?

How will this affect Roman Catholic apologetics, if at all and what do you think may be the motivation for this change?

Is it really very important or not?

Thanks
Michael

I would think that this would complicate matters with the Orthodox? I have not yet read why he did this?
