Patrick Madrid Speaking in Phoenix THIS WEEKEND

Those of you in the Phoenix area have a chance to hear popular Catholic apologist Patrick Madrid at St. Timothy’s in Mesa. In the morning he will be speaking on “Search & Rescue: How To Bring Friends and Family Into --or Back Into – The Catholic Church,” “The Top Reasons to Be --and Stay-- Catholic.” In the afternoon, he will be speaking about “Angels and Demons.”

We really need to support these great speakers that come out to our area and spread the news to others.

He’s certainly a good speaker, but I have the feeling he was talking to a much less well-catechized audience than I found the audience to be. I mean, I’m not even Catholic (yet) and he was really skimming the surface. That very much surprised me.

Another surprise is that the auditorium was nearly empty! Would more people have come if they offered cookies? I’ve never seen such a small seminar, especially in such a large diocese.

PS: I brought a friend though!
 
Yes, we only had about a hundred people, in the one of the largest parishes in the U.S. 😦 It wasn’t like it was not well-advertised within St. Tim’s – they had a huge notice in the bulletin. Cookies or no cookies, sometimes I wonder about people.:nope:

I agree that Pat’s talk has less intellectual rigor than most, but considering the level of catechesis among the average Catholic, most parishioners would have learned a lot. The people that need to come, don’t or won’t.

Glad you were able to come though, lel! Me and my boy were there too (we were hanging out with the old guy in the motorized wheel-chair— my good friend, Joe). I hope Steve Ray gets a better reception there in February.
 
I was shocked. If it was a hundred people I was surprised. Heck, my friend and I (then some of her friends, then some of her friends) all came from St. Mary’s.

I spent half the time trying to figure this out, so I might as well ask – I couldn’t find him on the St. Tim’s bulletin, is Joe a priest elsewhere in this diocese?

Steve Ray in February? Must set a reminder – is he a little more into intellectual rigor?

Yeah, it didn’t look like that many, so I counted and there were a hundred. The place is so big, it looked like a lot less.

Nah, Joe is a layman. He was active in evangelization and apologetics for many years – even before most people knew what apologetics was. Both of us go to St. Anne’s, and I saw at least a handful of other St. Anne’s people there.

About the same, except his strongpoint is the Scriptures and defending the Faith from history and the Bible. If you want to hear a sample of his presentation, go to the *Catholic Answers Live! *page and listen to one of the shows he guests on. He’s on at least once a month.

If you haven’t seen any of his “Footprints Of God” videos or DVD’s, I HIGHLY recommend them.

I would have thought maybe 50, and the place seats what, about 1500?

Remember that bit he said about Fr. Corapi and the liberal parish up on No. California? I kept thinking the same here…except St. Tim’s isn’t that liberal. But I didn’t see any real publicity around the diocese.

Black shirts and a cross aren’t reserved for priests you know. 😉

I wear one myself from time to time. I have an ulterior motive…inspire vocations in my domestic church but showing a little humility in wearing something that you end up getting ridicules by judemental peoples. When you live in Protestant country you have to learn to be strong. This is one way of walking the walk. Only I load it with apologetics to defend the faith. I used to be on the other side of the view…no not the Catholic agains wearing black shirts but the Protestant that ridiculed the Catholic priests and bishops for showing off their “wide borders”,don’t ask it’s a stupid argument now. I’m proud to see our priest wearing clericals.

Lack of attendance is a lack of good management by parish priests and other DRE’s in the parish and diocese. Getting in to great detail is not everyone’s goal. Some of them are just trying to reach the really flaky Catholics to get them started. It’s like teaching children. You start with milk.
