Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew how a canonized saint becomes the patron of something. i.e. St. Teresa of Avila - patron of headaches (and everything else she is patron of) 😃

I went on wikipedia and searched patron saint thinking they would have info related to my question, but they didn’t so I came here instead. šŸ‘

Usually a saint is chosen as patron of a particular cause simply because there is something related to that cause in their own lives.

Thus most of the patron saints of soldiers, such as Joan of Arc or Martin of Tours, were soldiers themselves. St Joan is also a patron of France because of her extraordinary love for France and her efforts against the English invaders of her country.

St Peregrine is patron of cancer because he himself was cured of cancer the night before he was due for an amputation, thanks do divine intervention.

St Therese the Little Flower is patron of missionaries, not because she was one but because she wanted desperately to be one and couldn’t due to ill health.

St Teresa of Avila suffered from migraines I believe, hence her patronage against headaches.

For the record, Saint Gabriel the Archangel is the patron saint of us Postal Workers. Yes, Gabriel ā€œwent postalā€
(OK, how much penance will I have to do for that? )
I always liked St. Lawrence. St. Lawrence had a great sense of humor even at his death. When he was being grilled alive telling his torturerers ā€œI am done on this side! Turn me over and eat.ā€ Apparently the Church has a sense of humor to and made him the patron of chefs.
