Peanut Butter Warning

Thanks to LynnieLew’s thread I found out about the problem going around with Salmonella, I too had a jar of affected PB in my pantry! Bad week to try out a different brand of PB!
Please be advised that the affected brands are both Peter Pan and Great Value (Walmart’s brand). I hope its ok I posted this here since it may affect so many people’s health.

Product May be Contaminated With Salmonella
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee (a bacterium that causes foodborne illness). The affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number “2111.” Both the Peter Pan and Great Value brands are manufactured in a single facility in Georgia by ConAgra. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected.

Thanks for the post – I found an affected jar of peanut butter in my cupboard. From the frequency of comments on this, it seems that many, many jars have the product code in question.

Luckily for me, I’m a single guy so I don’t have to worry about my kids eating it.

Yeah, I just read this on the ConAgra site:

Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter Products Beginning with Product Code 2111 Recalled for Possible Salmonella Contamination
OMAHA, Neb.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Feb. 14, 2007–ConAgra Foods today announced that it has taken the precautionary measure of voluntarily recalling all varieties of Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut Butter beginning with product code 2111 imprinted on the lid of both brands. ConAgra Foods is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate a statistical report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that these products may be linked to the foodborne illness salmonella.

While this affects Great Value Peanut Butter beginning with product code 2111, there are other manufacturers of Great Value Peanut Butter that are not affected by this recall.

“Although none of our extensive product tests have indicated the presence of salmonella, we are taking this precautionary measure because consumer health and safety is our top priority,” said Chris Kircher, spokesperson for ConAgra Foods. “We are working closely with the FDA to better understand its concerns, and we will take whatever additional measures are needed to ensure the safety, quality and wholesomeness of our products.”

If consumers have this product, they should discard it, but save the product lid. For a full refund, consumers must return the Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter product lid along with their name and mailing address to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103.

Consumers with questions or concerns about the recall can call the 24-hour toll-free hotline at 866-344-6970. For more information about salmonella, visit www.ific.org.

It may not be in every jar, but I would rather be safe than sorry .

interesting that the walmart brand is manufactored by the same people who do Peter Pan…Sometimes the generic is the name brand but they just wanted you to think it’s not…

Sometimes the generic also supplies the wrapper they put on the jars when the product isn’t quite meeting the quality standards they’d like, too.

I have seen this done in a vegetable cannery I worked in. When the really nice stuff came through, they filled the order of Picky Customer A. When the quality went down, they switched the label (still using identical cartons) to Not-Paying-So-Much Customer B or even In-House Frugal Brand Z. Then when the quality went back up, the wrappers for Picky Customer A came back. There are quality control people continually taking samples up and down the production line, so this literally happened over the course of a single shift.

Sometimes, though, the product being sold under different labels is literally identical. It’s like anything. You have to try the product to know.

I have a large jar of the affected peanutbutter in my pantry but we are already about 80% through it!!! I think we’re safe to finish it!!

Me too only my jar is only 33% gone! Not only that but I am the only one who has been eating from this jar and no ill effects.

We have only had one case here of possible infection from the peanut butter.

The fact that it is the same as Peter Pan is interesting too as sometimes that brand is cheaper than the GV Wal-Mart brand or about the same price, hmmm.

I have had several bouts with a “mysterious virus”, which I have within the last hour, realized was salmonella.
I found a near-empty jar & 2 others with the same 2111 product code. I have tossed them.
Please, people, don’t take chances! I had no idea that I was getting food poisoning. I just thought it was something that was “going around”…It was Peter Pan going around, & I now know why I kept spiking fevers “for no reason.”
