I was just wondering, when some one has been away from reconcilliation for many many years 15+. Should one receive a stiff penance, or just the opposite as returning would have been so difficult that it in itself would have been sufficent.

It should be up to your priest to give you the penance that he feels best suits your situation. I’d been away from confession for 6 years and my penance could have seemed “light” but it was just right for me. Does that make any sense?

I was away for about 8 years. My penance was also pretty light. But right, as the other poster said.

Our pastor gives a light penance, but he told us in a parent’s class for First Confession, that someone can always do more if they feel called in that direction.

25 years of no confessions, took us about an hour to get through it, when I received my penance from the priest I said to him"that’s it! all of that and that’s all I receive in penance(it was something so minimal and yet one of the most moving things I’ve ever had happen to me, so not so minimal at all) His response was" Christ died for us, once, and for all sin!! pretty smart guy huh!!! I will never for get that penance!!
