Penitential Rite led by cantor?

Our cantor leads the penitential rite in our parish each week (he sings the petitions, we respond “Lord hear us”).

I thought saying these petitions was the responsibility of only the priest or deacon (with the congregation responding).

Can someone clarify? Thank you!
 
It is permitted for a cantor to issue the invocations, such as,

You came to heal the contrite. Lord have mercy.
You came to call sinners. Christ have mercy.
You intercede for us at the right hand of the Father. Lord have mercy.

This is because the Missal indicates that these invocations may be issued by the “priest, deacon, or any suitable minister.”

However, the absolution, “May the Lord have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life” is reserved ONLY to the priest.
