I was under the impression that the penitential rite is modeled after one of the psalms.

I recall reading somewhere that one of the Psalms was in three parts with the first being a confession of sin, the second being a request for mercy and the third part being a glorificaiton of Go and this was the basis for the three parts of the penitential rite.

Is this not correct?

My question really is, what psalm is it?

I don’t know if the Penitential Rite is modeled after a Psalm…but, your description makes one think of the great Miserere Mei – Psalm 51.

Isn’t Form B (Lord, we have sinned against you, etc) taken from a Psalm?

In the Missal of 1962 and before the Priest would recite the Judica Me to begin the Mass of the Catechumens. The prayer was part of Psalm 42. After this prayer the Priest would offer his Confiteor. The current Missal has the Confiteor followed by the Kyrie.

Why, yes. The first call-and-response is from Baruch 3:2, and the second is from Psalm 85:7. Form B is probably based on part of the penitential act in the E.F. of the Mass.

I’m was thinking of shaving my head and getting a tatoo of psalm 51 on my scalp.

I’ll take the general gist of the thread to mean that the rite is not based on a psalm. Can’t remember where I read or heard that. Maybe I’m confusing it with something I read about something else.

Thanks for the answers.

The lavabo rite/washing of the hands right before the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer is taken from Psalm 51 I believe…“Lord wash away my iniquity, cleanse me of my sin.”
