Penitential Rite plus 'talks'

Hi, I go to daily Mass. We have one priest. I am finding it quite trying, though I.m sure I need to lighten up perhaps. Each day during the week we never have a penitential rite. By that I mean, after the ‘sign of the cross’ and an opening verse the reader is straight up into the lectionary with the first reading. No ‘Lord have mercy’ etc. At the children’s Mass on Wednesday he happened to say to the children “We always start with a sorry prayer’. News to me! Apart from that we get lectured and harangued before and during the homily on the difficulties of accepting change, letting go of the past, mimics people in general saying things like"Father,why can’t we have kneelers” “Father, we don’t want to change the altar” etc (We have an antique marble altar at the rea of the sacristy which is where we keep the reseved sacrament and he doesn’t like it). This morning went on about devotions. It is really hard work. Advice ? - I know patience is a virtue.

Unless you are brave and courageous, I’d find a different parish.
Some people can hack it, I found that I couldn’t, and left the Church for many years. Now I go to a parish with a reverent Mass, and intend to hold on with everything I’ve got. Best wishes.

Thanks for the support. I don’t feel that I can or would leave the parish as there are many good and holy people there and they need me I’m the organist. I feel this priest wants to lead the parish well but feels some are in the ‘dark ages’. He is wrong but I know he also believes in the Real Presence and so on. I want to know how to help him. I feel he influenced by Karl Rahner, the likes of Richard Rohr and Joan Chittister. He never quite says. We need our priests and I want this one to head back to Rome not away from it. It’s a hard graft some times he shocks me with the odd comment. Is the Pentitentiary Rite left off during the week serious? It is always in place on Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses. I’m wondering if I can buy him a book or something. This is like watching a spiritual desolation and I want to help. I am praying a lot for him.

You know, I’m really starting to wonder what level of disobedience our priests would accept from us. If we decided to stop doing what’s proper to us at Mass… how long would they take it? For the love of God (and I mean that seriously), why can’t people stop tinkering with the Mass and destroying the faith?

This might sound harsh, but perhaps you should write a letter to your Bishop and say you’d prefer to keep the altar and change the priest.

And what’s that about devotions? Is it something like: They’re old-fashioned superstitious clap-trap that no one believes in anyway, so why are you coming to church 30 minutes early and staying 30 minutes longer to pray to some statue (that we’re having removed, anyway, since it’s too “Catholic”) or hold some medal (which is an idol) and pray those really old “traditional” words, when you could (SHOULD!) just be showing up “on time” (or late, we don’t really mind) and singing that newest lovely “hymn” to God our mother (or better yet, about US and how we’re SO great!)?
