Penn and Teller show, 'Try to Fool us'

I used to watch this show a few times a week, but have not seen it for the past month or so, anyone else watch this, or know if it was cancelled? I think it was on the CW network, channel 25 here.

I always like watching stage type magic, especially the card tricks, its amazing how some people can get so good at this! I guess the old saying is true, the hand is quicker than the eye.

Yes, “Penn And Teller: Fool Us” was renewed by The CW network in the U.S. for a third season (the first season having been all UK-based) and will be back possibly Summer or Fall 2016.

At least five of the effects featured on the show’s just-ended season - including three that fooled Penn & Teller - are now commercially available for anyone to purchase. (Nope, I’m not saying which ones, suffice to say I wish the Joshua Jay blindfolded card-ID one was that would be released to the public.)

While the show is (mostly) suitable for families, Penn is still atheist, so it always helps to take his comments with a grain of salt.

Love the show. I feel like it was a winter/spring season show. Shin Lim was my favorite!

While Penn may be an atheist (he talks more like an agnostic), in the few interviews I’ve seen him discuss religion he has been respectful of others beliefs, articulate in his comments, and at times has had more knowledge of religion and Catholicism than some of his Catholic interviewers.

That being said, I’ve seen a few of the shows and its never strayed into political, philosophical or religious discussions. Just illusions.

Although, I will say this in Penn’s favor – he may be atheist, but he’s not, as far as I can tell an angry, “Bill Maher”-style atheist. He once recounted a story about a fan of his who engaged him in sincere conversation after a show, and at the end, very unobtrusively presented him with a Bible. He didn’t berate or belittle the man, he instead said “thank you” and went on his way. He later said it was the man’s sincerity that struck him – he wasn’t trying from the outset to evangelize Penn, but did what Penn took as an act of charity, even going so far as to say that he believed that the man would have been acting out of hatred if he HADN’T given Penn the Bible.

Same here, I can not remember ever hearing religion come up on the show. I think back in the 80s and early 90s, Penn was a little more ‘controversial’, but he seems to have cleaned up his act.

I also saw him on some show sticking up for pro-life protesters. He said if they really believe life begins at conception, how could they not protest? Also said he has no respect for those who say they are pro-life but it’s a personal choice.
All this did not go down well with the moderator and fellow guests.

He had a show on Showtime where he not only attacked the Bible, but had an entire episode dedicate to how horrible the Catholic Church is.

I would agree with that to a point. I think Penn has in the past been more abrasive, along the lines of referring to believers in God as stupid. However I noticed when he took his turn on Celebrity Apprentice a few years back, he came across as more jovial and friendly (as well as probably the smartest celebrity on the show). I think he realizes that it’s probably better for his brand image to not be too abrasive. He’s probably not exactly going for the “family entertainment” image with his Vegas show, but if he wants to have broad appeal to a wide variety of audience, it’s best not to insult them. And the “angry atheist” market is pretty narrow, if you’re trying to make a living in live entertainment.

Kinda like how if you have ever noticed up and coming entertainers, especially comedians, but all entertainers to some degree, when they first start out, they are controversial, they like to shock and awe, but as they become more successful, the less controversial they become. Ive seen this happen more than a few times, (mainly with SNL cast members, who went on to bigger things), I think it has to do with ad money, a successful comedian would not want to publicly blast a company ‘paying the bills’, but am unknown upstart, they would have no problem with it.
