I act as the liturgist and mc for a high school youth group and our retreat mass falls on Pentecost this year. I’d like to do mass with a little more formality: incense, more servers, and a short but slightly more elaborate than usual gospel procession. The priest and youth minister are ambivalent about any changes I make provided they don’t add much time. I’m concerned that I might not be doing the most pastoral thing. What do you think? Is it worth the formality if it will be lost on the high schoolers?

Adding a little extra solemnity to one of the Church’s holiest days is not a bad idea; however, if your celebrant discourages it and would not be happy, then you are better off obeying him instead of doing your own thing because whatever way he wants Mass to go, it will go that way.
