Pentecostals: What good does your pastor shouting and screaming at the congregation actually do other than intimidate them? Is God not a God of love

This isn’t to say they’re all like this, I’m not going to say they’re all like this. In fact I’ve seen some realitivly subdued services too.

All I can say is oh my goodness.

At “Camp Meeting” each summer in the Santa Cruz mountains the Church of the Nazarene held their summer retreat at “Bulah Park Camp Ground”…owned by the church…lot of singing and clapping and shouting…
Boy did I have have a flashback when I read this part.

I had totally forgotten that there was a “church camp”, just a few blocks from us.

Every year, for a week to 10 days in the summer, our town’s population would literally double. (It was a very very small town).

We could hear the singing and preaching blocks away. Always loved everyone coming to the door every night inviting us to services (not really)

Thanks for that drive down memory lane.

Oy vey! These gave me a laugh, especially Bishop Wiley and Sister Wendy.

I am glad that more liturgical churches exist–if this type of worship were the only choice, I’d find it VERY hard to darken the door of a church every Sunday.

LOL, I remember on year in particular…things were just getting “heated up” at the Tabernacle…a young woman in a peasant blouse and blue jeans came in from one of the doors and started yelling…“I’m sick and tired of you people not caring about the garbage you leave in front of my house. I also don’t want any of you people parking in front of my house and blocking my drive way…” She said a few other things…used a few expletives which made some of the old ladies gasp…ahh yes…memories.🙂

One memory that particualrly stands out…All in all I have very fond memories of Camp Meeting time…I met my wife at camp meeting…even though I didn’t know we would end up married at the time…I was introduced to her by the pastor of my mom’s church…my future wife and her mother were moving to the Bay Area from Vancouver Washington…she and I explored the Friends Meeting in San Jose and were married “after the manner of Friends” when we turned 21…we met when we were 16.

OMG!!

We weren’t that bad, but some of the neighborhood kids, myself included, would ride through the campgrounds late at night, music blaring (non christian of course), lighting firecrackers etc.

The next nights service was usually a bit quieter. Good think my parents never figured out what was going on…hehehe

You are so right…ahh…memories.

I remember the loud music…and I do remember the firecrackers…not at night though…but during the services. When it was hot the doors had to be opened to get the breeze going…it could get sweltering in the Tabernacle…no air conditioning.🙂 Of course the firecrackers during the services could have been from Nazarene kids…not all were saints.

LOL…no…back in the 70’s most “camp meeting” services were a lot like regular church services…just a bit more singing…shouting…hand clapping and “evangelists” from around the country.

The only 'entertainment" I remember was a muscial called I believe “He Lives”…Don Francisco used several of the songs from the muscial on one of his albums rockymountainministries.org/CDs/cdhesalive.html I still enjoy his music.

Question: Why are these called “camp meetings” anyway when there’s no camp, no sleeping bags, no s’mores at the services? I’ve seen advertisements for these “camp meetings” on INSP and TBN but never quite understood their origins.

There was “camps” actually. There were cabins families could rent for the week…there were areas where tents were set up for those who wanted to “rough it”. There was a lodge where breakfast, lunch and dinner was served to those who didn’t want to cook in their cabins on their “camp stoves” or in their camp site. I tasted “smores” for the first time at Beulah Park Campgrounds in the Santa Cruz mountains.

There was an oudoor chapel called “Wiley Temple”…it was down in a canyon with rough hewn benches…a stump carved into a pulpit and a huge cross set into the ground. The teens had chapel there every day between activities and every night after the main service in the “Tabernacle” a different guest speaker with lots of music and testimonies and hand clapping. Many troubled young people were “sponsored” by various Nazarene churches to pay for their week at camp…it was some of the first times for some of them they ever heard they were loved by God.

Some of us met our “first loves” at Camp Meeting…some of us met our “only loves” at Camp Meeting…as I said…I met my future wife there…that was a lifetime ago.

“Camp Meetings” I believe began during the depression…the old “Arbor Churches” that were set up along some of the highways…it echoes back to the "tent revivals’ in the 20’s and '30’s…mostly in rural areas…the original “camp meetings” were interfaith from what I understand…some of those groups which came out of the “holiness movement” and “pentacostal movements” usually began among lower middle class to poor people…for some of these people this was the only “church” they were welcome in.

My parents came from the South out of the Depression…my dad stopped going to church for years when he showed up for chuch in his polished cowboy boots and western flannel shirt and new Sunday go to meeting Levis…he was told to go home and dress correctly…“We dress up when we come to chuch boy!”…He had worn the best he had…he didn’t go to church for a long time after that…but he would go to Camp Meetings.
