I’ve read them all – good choiices, many of them! I am reminded what I believe was a comment made by (?) St. Catherine of Siena, I believe. She said, “If you would be a saint, WILL IT.” It doesn’t seem to make much difference whether or not the Church declares you a saint, because what’s important is that GOD KNOWS you are a saint. He has given us guidelines and the example of His Son, His Mother, and those saints, great and humble both, as illumination for our journey into heaven. It seems to me that all we need to do is “follow their lights” and we’ll arrive safely.
I have many lovely people in my life who SHOULD be saints: my friend Theresa is one. She NEVER misses an opportunity to do an act of charity. Another is my friend, Shari, who, although she is as ‘rough as a cob’ (with a mouth like an occasional sailor) her heart is loving and kind, and she performs great acts of charity without giving it a second thought. Did I mention, she’s a Lutheran lady? We talk about our faith, and I just know her heart is as close to Jesus as I hope mine may become. My friend Mike is a simple soul, who is working hard to find his way back to God. Even though his faith may be weak, his kindness to others is monumental, and he’s an example of beatitude.
See? These people ARE saints, disguised as humans. The same as Jesus may come to us disguised as a person in need, looking for our mercy. Probably NONE of them, nor I, will ever be declared saints. But I look forward to BEING saints WITH THEM, when we arrive in eternity. I look forward to being saints WITH YOU TOO, because you are also capable of great love and sainthood. So, be a saint – WILL IT. God loves you, and so do I.
