That is just sick, I remember always drinking pepsi products all the way through my youth to almost present, Now that I hear/read about this,I shall never drink another Pepsi product ever again…

I think you guys have been trolled - I’m pretty sure this stems from an old chain letter going around, except it was the Coca Cola company when I heard it last, and maybe Taco Bell for some reason…

  1. I’ve never heard it about Coca-Cola; Taco Bell is owned by Pepsico.
  2. This is actually fairly recent news; if you read the article you’ll see links to where this has come out lately. I’m pretty sure that if this were just an urban legend it wouldn’t be getting the coverage that it is.

That does not mean what you think it means.

Pepsi’s subcontractor used cultured human cells, from a culture known as HEK-293: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HEK_cell

Short version: back in 1970s, some cells from an aborted fetus were removed, and cultured (grown) in the lab. That culture exists to this day. So the cells involved are not taken from an aborted fetus, they are descended from cells obtained from a single abortion 40 years ago.

There is in fact a multitude of other human cell lines. Cancer researchers often use cells from HeLa line. The original cells this line is derived from (many generation ago) were taken from a tumor in a woman named Henrietta Lacks, back in 1951, hence the name: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HeLa

HEK-293, HeLa, and other human cell lines are used throughout the biotech field.

I have no idea why the contractor in question used specifically HEK-293, but I guess there was some technical reason for it.

The only questionable part in the whole business is why would anyone use cultured cell lines for development of taste sensor for soft drinks. Now that is something which is really weird.

I beg to disagree. Kittens kept in jars so they’re shapes?

Also, this isn’t a new story. We had a thread about this a while ago. After some research it turns out that Pepsi released a statement to say that while the company does use fetal cells, it doesn’t use them for their product and there are no dead babies in your drinks.

After a quick check, the claim that HEK-293 line comes from an electively aborted fetus also seems questionable.

The cells were cultured in the Netehrlands in 1972. However, abortion there was only decriminalized in 1984.

So logically, they had to be cultured from a miscarried fetus.

Pepsi soft drinks are probably not made with flavors which have been tested with the controversial cells. After all, Pepsi has had a well established flavor for a very long time.

The flavors developed by Senomyx are likely used in newer products made by PepsiCo, particularly those with unusual flavors. Remember, PepsiCo is a food conglomerate and makes many products unrelated to Pepsi. It makes, for example:

Frito-Lay products (Doritos, Sun Chips, Tostitos, etc)

Tropicana (Tropicana and Dole juices)

Quaker (oatmeal, breakfast cereals, Rice-a-Roni)

Gatorade

Ocean Spray

SoBe

Lipton teas

And there are quite a few others
pepsico.com/Brands.html

PepsiCo is not revealing which products use the Senomyx flavors, so it could be in any of them.

actually, Taco Bell has not been owned by Pepsi since the late 90s, when they, along with KFC and Pizza Hut, were spun off into a new company, Yum! Brands.

I really would like to know the truth about all of this. If it turns out to be true that they are using fetal cells then I will boycott them.

It sounds like a dodge. Not saying it is, but Pepsi IS getting a few products developed by Semonyx using that taste receptor tech, so that seems to suggest that they are. The only defense they offer is that they asked the Semonyx company to sign off on using ethical research – which could mean anything.
