What is the Church’s stance on perennialism (that all religions are getting at the same reality just in different ways)? Obviously we hold that there is one full truth, but I have heard that each religion could have bits of the Truth so is perennialism right or partially right?

any help is appreciated 🙂

Isn’t this called “pluralism”? Anyway, I think the Church’s stance is that the Catholic Church is the fullest truth and the one sure way to salvation, but that other religions are capable bringing people close to God. My :twocents:

I’ve never heard of pluralism, the reason that I ask is because I am a comparative religious major at OSU and we were talking about how most religions have similar themes or rituals in them. One student suggested that it is because of perennialism and I was just wondering what stance I should take on this subject because I do not want to speak anything other than the truth:)

The Church basically teaches that they hold the full truth as it has been revealed to the world. The Church’s stance on other religions is that they are false overall but may hold truths in them (e.g. Protestants believe Jesus is God but their Religion is still false). The Church does not teach that all Religions are getting the same reality in different ways. When we say other Religions have bits of the truth we do not mean that God reveals those bits of truth to them and then it all to us. We believe that the bits of truth held in other Religions are either from us (e.g. Protestants) and other truths are those that can be found naturally. The one exception I would say is Judaism. We believe that they have been revealed God up until a certain point and that they hold the truth but Jesus came to fullfill it, so they are more incomplete than simply false.
