I’ve seen at several different parishes a processional cross, usually at the left side of the Sanctuary (when facing it). It is always present, but not used, even if another one is in use during Mass or other liturgical rites. What is the significance of having that processional cross always present in the Sanctuary?

Maybe the parish just owns two of them. We do. We keep one down front, the other in the vesting Sacristy.

Our parish has two processional crosses. One is a beautiful carved wooden crucifix with a lovely corpus which someone donated. Unfortunately it is too large and too heavy to use. We have a day chapel, and it has taken up residence there.

I agree with pianist clare. The parish probably owns two of them, and may favor using one over the other for some reason.

LOL, yes…I always shudder when I see a little girl or a little boy who desperately wants to be the cross bearer struggling to keep the big brass one upright. I have visions of them bonking some poor person on the aisle with it. When I was in charge of the school Masses, being the cross-bearer was a “perk” of middle school.
