In our 19 years of marriage, we practiced NFP for the first 10. I do not know what we were thinking, or why it seemed ok at the time, but my husband had a vasectomy after 10 years of marriage.

I am now 43 and my husband is almost 45. We have 3 children (16, 14, and 11). Our whole family has had a strong conversion experience over the last year and it suddenly hit me (just this week, I am ashamed to admit) that we did a terrible, terrible thing by having the vasectomy.

I will go to confession asap and talk to my priest, but I am still feeling just absolutely sick over this–that we shut down God’s creative powers in us. There is a lot more to this story that makes it a bit complicated, but the bottom line is that we messed with God. Any words for us?

Going to confession is the best thing you can do, both of you!

Also if possible consider having the vasectomy reversed…however note the Church does NOT require this if it will be a financial hardship.

Don’t be sick–be relieved that you “saw the light” and will be able to instruct your children properly. God in His infinite mercy will love to forgive a contrite penenant!

I know a couple that had something similar happen. They decided to practice Natural Family Planning even though they are not able to conceive.

Not only has practicing NFP strengthened their marriage considerably, it also gives them peace of mind as sort of a gift of penance or sacrifice to God.

You never know–some vasectomy reversals work! God bless you and good luck!
