Permission for confession

Do we still need permission from our Parrish priest to go to confession to go to confession to a priest in another Parrish?

I found this discipline while reading council cannons. I believe it was from the fourth Lateran council in 1215 or from the Council of Trent.

You can go to confession anywhere you want. Many people go to confession in a different parish because it makes them more comfortable going to a priest who does not know them. You do not need permission, you just go.

The reason for that canon was that the it ensured that the pastor knew the person had at least made the “onece a year minimum” confession. (Among other reasons). Suffice to say that the canon no longer has force of law because the canons have been revised over the centuries.

You can go to confession anywhere in the world to any competent confessor (ie a Catholic priest who has faculties to hear confessions).

The only time you might need permission would be if you’re in a situation where you have to demonstrate that you’ve recently confessed–such as if you’re about to get married. Unless you’re in a situation like that, the principle does not apply.
