Are there “rules” that hold about WHAT you should pray during adoration? I go for one hour per week and I always feel as if everyone else there has these glorious, involved prayers going when I’m just there praying my rosary and talking to my God. Of course, this is important too, but I want to be sure I’m doing it right. thanks-twk:o

No, you may pray however you like. If others are present, though, you should pray silently and without unnecessary movement so as not to distract them in their prayers.

The Rosary is especially recommended for praying during Adoration.
 
Hi there are no rules to what you should pray in adoration the Lord is so happy that you have made the time to go and sit with him.
I once said to a lady sitting near me, i have had a very distracted holy hour i couldn’t seem to pray while you on the other hand seemed deep in prayer, she told me she was actually sleeping. don’t compare your prayer to others, The Lord is pleaswd with our efforts,

YOUR relationship with God in prayer is uniquely your own, unlike anyone else’s. Don’t worry about what others are doing. Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you in prayer, and follow His lead.
 
I ahve said part of the LOTH, and then done spiritual reading. There is not a “right” way for adoration.

I am reminded of the apocryphal story of the little old man who was asked what he did at Adoration. His answer: “I look at Jesus, and He looks at me”.

Enough said.

And just why do you “feel” that? What evidence do you have?

I dare say that most of “everyone else there” is doing the same thing that you are doing.
 
I do all the things mentioned here–including sleeping once! I have only had a set hour for a shot time and am still getting ‘comfortable’ with what to do while there. I have found a booklet by Ligouri press that I’ve been following and that is helping me get used to this time. Like anything other devotional practice, it might take a little practice to get used to being there for an hour. But unlike other things, you can just sit there and ‘look at Jesus’ and have a wonderful hour!
 
I have a weekly hour and what I do really depends on the day and what’s going on. I always start the hour with a rosary for vocations and for seminarians (I made a promise to our vocations director.)

What happens next depends on what’s going on in my life. Sometimes I’ll read and meditate on the psalms or the gospel. Sometimes I’ll try to work my way through another passage from Benedict’s book about Jesus. Usually, I wind up spending the entire hour thinking about one paragraph.

Other times I just listen. If I’ve been praying thoughout the week trying to discern something, I’ll use my adoration hour to just listen. I figure if I’m going to ask for guidance I’d better listen for the answer. I’ve gotten it more than once via a “divine slap upside the head” during my hour of silence.

On SUday I was waiting for baptisms to begin and no one was yet in the church except the rest of the baptism team. So I sat in one of the pews to pray and I fell asleep. I awoke when a family group noisly came in for the baptism. When I walked in the sacristy one of the musicians said she needed to ask me a question but saw that I was deep in prayer. I had to tell her I was actually sleeping. It was an embarassing but funny moment.
 
My volunteer hour in our Perpetual Adoration Chapel was 11:00 P.M. to Midnight. There were two elderly men who also used to come at that time, both of whom would invariably fall asleep. Once, when one of the priests came in and found them sleeping (they woke up when he came in because of a creaky door), he told them not to worry or be embarassed - that if we fall asleep during Adoration it’s just like having fallen asleep in the arms of Jesus.

God knows we don’t mean to fall asleep on Him; He knows how tired we may be. Since Jesus said if we see Him, we’ve seen the Father, and we are like little children in the arms of the Father, then we shouldn’t feel distressed when we fall asleep. 🙂

I hear ya. But fear not…your prayers are your prayers.

I felt that way my first time in Adoration (well, my only time so far…), I wondered what I should pray, and I wondered what the lady next to me was praying. I felt like she knew exactly what she was doing and I was sitting here lookin’ like a fool drawing blanks. I started with one prayer to God, thanking Him for Christ…and soon enough, I had several more prayers. I couldn’t help but get teary-eyed. I mean…I was in the presence of Christ! It’s hard not to be moved. 😃

When I enter the Adoration Chapel, I prostrate myself on the ground before our Lord and ask Him to send me the Holy Spirit to help me pray. Remember, as it states in Holy Scripture, the Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf with groanings unimaginable.

God knows what we need before we ask Him. Jesus just asks that we spend time with Him - we don’t even need to say anything.

Keep going - Adoration is an integral part of your relationship with Jesus, as is receiving Him frequently in Holy Communion (daily Mass, if possible). Every time you go to Adoration, great graces flow!
