Sorry if this does not belong in this thread or anything, but i need to write a paper for a class on any topic we want. And, I would like to write about abortion. But, what do you think is a good way to add to my knowledge or insight on this topic in a unique way? Or, do any of you have a more interesting topic you think I could write about? Let me know, thanksss 🙂

Approach it like news reporter by interviewing some folks from Planned Parenthood, some people from a local Life care Center, maybe even a few who have had abortions. or decided not to. 👍

Do some research from various pro-life websites and literature. Focus more on convincing people from a secular perspective on why abortion is wrong and why it can also be detrimental to people’s physical and psychological health. Then you can bring up the religious ethical side very briefly and about the Natural Law philosophy that guided the American founding fathers, the Magna Carta, etc. which is entrenched in our legal tradition. Show how abortion was illegal in many States prior to 1973. Pictures or written descriptions of the procedure are also helpful.

This lengthy article can help you out to make the scientific case:

"The Embryo as Human Being: A Scientific Case," by Robert P. George, Maureen Condic, and Patrick Lee

Remember also to avoid plagiarism!

Thank you soo much! Do you think it’s a good idea to put scriptures in my paper as well, to reflect on the Catholic view of it and why it is wrong?

Yes, you can put scripture in it. That’s what I did. Also, if you’re talking to a secular and diverse audience you can also probably show what other religions believe. I tried that in a speech I did for a Public Speaking Class that I had to take in college. Each student had to make speeches on whatever topic they wanted to practice the skills they’ve learned in front of the class. Overall, my speech was well received, though certainly there were some that disagreed.

If you want to have some fun, write on end note #19 of the DECLARATION ON PROCURED ABORTION by the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 1974, endorsed by Pope Paul VI.

“19. This declaration expressly leaves aside the question of the moment when the spiritual soul is infused. There is not a unanimous tradition on this point and authors are as yet in disagreement. For some it dates from the first instant; for others it could not at least precede nidation. It is not within the competence of science to decide between these views, because the existence of an immortal soul is not a question in its field. It is a philosophical problem from which our moral affirmation remains independent for two reasons: (1) supposing a belated animation, there is still nothing less than a human life, preparing for and calling for a soul in which the nature received from parents is completed, (2) on the other hand, it suffices that this presence of the soul be probable (and one can never prove the contrary) in order that the taking of life involve accepting the risk of killing a man, not only waiting for, but already in possession of his soul.”
