How can I as a laymann show my devotion to my patron saint? Which prayers can I say?
Can I just make som up or can I to give my devotion at lest a somewhat paraliturgical form say some part of the divine office in his honour? I wish to pray in the mind of the church so to speak, event though it is a part of my personal life of prayer.
Aside from whatever devotions and prayers you have for your Saint, you CAN show your devotion via The Divine Office.:yup:
Here’s how. A quote from THE DIVINE OFFICE FOR DODOS, by Madeline Pecora Nugent. In fact, I called her just five minutes ago to confirm this.
“On a Ferial Day; that is, a day on which no official Church celebration is held, you may choose to celebrate a certain office as a Memorial. Follow the guidelines for the office that you choose. You may also choose to pray the Office Of The Blessed Virgin or Office of the Dead on a ferial day.”
For example, I have a devotion to St. Philomena. On ferial days I can use the Common of Virgins or the Common of Martyrs. The variety of closing prayers will include a couple where you can insert the name of the Saint you are honoring.
I have other saints I like to pray to. And as a member of AA, whenever one of our members die, I ask the family if it is OK to pray the Office Of The Dead for them. Some say no, and I honor their request. Some say yes, and the next ferial day I go into action.
Saturdays which are ferial in Ordinary Timer also can be used for a special Office to the BVM.
So draw up a list of saints you would like to say hello to, wait for a ferial day, pick one saint (or a group of martyrs), and go for it.
Note, this is for post-Vatican II versions of the DIVINE OFFICE. I don’t know about earlier versions
