Hello!

I know poverty is a general rule in monasticism but I was wondering if there are any congregations that to permit sort of personal ownership, I am thinking in case of a inheritance or a personal car. It’s a question I put myself for a while, if a monk/member of a congregation can actually have something in his very own name or everything goes to the order or monastery and it is shared.

Now I don’t imagine in less strict orders/congregations you cannot own your laptop or mobile phone, but I’m thinking in general.

Thank you!

It varies by order/congregation. There’s variation on the definition of personal property and those with simple vows are usually allowed to inherit. A car might be too big for most to consider personal, but a phone and/or computer are becoming more standard “personal” items.
