To honor my many American friends and family I devote today and tomorrow to "The Glorious Fourth" . Although Congress unanimously voted to accept the motions of formal independence on July 2nd, the now-famous document, The Declaration of Independence , was not itself voted on until July 4th. Copies of it were immediately made for distribution throughout the colonies. Throughout the summer the various delegates showed up for the ‘official’ signing. The last signature, that of Matthew Thornton of New Hampshire, was finally affixed in November. John Adams was quoted as saying, on July 2nd, that that day would be remembered as the key date in American history. I’m sure he is fine with the 4th, as testy as he could be with everything else.
“A general dissolution of principles and manners will more surely overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue then will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader.”
― Samuel Adams
“The distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers, and New Englanders are no more. I Am Not A Virginian, But An American!”
― Patrick Henry
“There! His Majesty can now read my name without glasses. And he can double the reward on my head!”
― John Hancock (Hancock’s signature is unusually large on the document)
“Let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve of monarcy, that in America the law is King. For as in absolute governments the King is law, so in free countries the law ought to be King; and there ought to be no other.”
― Thomas Paine
“I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go directly in harm’s way.”
― John Paul Jones
“In questions of power, let no more be heard of confidence in man, but bind him down from mischief by the chains of the constitution.”
― Thomas Jefferson
“May our land be a land of liberty, the seat of virtue, the asylum of the oppressed, a name and a praise in the whole Earth, until the last shock of time shall bury the empires of the whole world in one common undistinguished ruin!”
― Joseph Warren
