Andy Samuel Griffith (1926 – 2012) was an American actor, comedian, television producer, southern gospel singer, and writer whose career spanned seven decades in music and television. Known for his southern drawl, his characters with a folksy-friendly personality, and his gruff but friendly voice, Griffith was a Tony Award nominee for two roles, and gained prominence in the starring role in director Elia Kazan’s film A Face in the Crowd (1957) before he became better known for his television roles, playing the lead roles of Sheriff Andy Taylor in the sitcom The Andy Griffith Show (1960–1968) and Ben Matlock in the legal drama Matlock (1986–1995).

"Any time I try to play anything that doesn’t come natural, I’m just plain bad."

"I still play that guitar. It’s a Martin D-18 with a clear pick guard. I’ve played that guitar on and off my TV shows for nearly 50 years."

"I wanted to prove that I could play something else, but there were 249 episodes out there of ‘Mayberry,’ and it was aired every day. It was hard to escape."

"I’ve been a story teller for a long time. I started as a singer and found out I didn’t have a very good voice. That’s the reason I went into acting."

"I’m not really wise. But I can be cranky."

"You know when you’re young you think you will always be. As you become more fragile, you reflect and you realize how much comfort can come from the past."

"
Lonesome Rhodes ( A Face in the Crowd ) had wild mood swings. He’d be very happy, he’d be very said, he’d be very angry, very depressed, and I had to pull all of these emotions out of myself. And it wasn’t easy. "

I grew up watching “The Andy Griffith Show” and my dad later loved “Matlock” but when I saw “A Face in the Crowd” on TCM about 10 years ago, I finally realized what a great actor Andy Griffith really was. That was an amazing movie.

I will have to look for that. Years ago he was in a made for TV movie where he played a “good ole boy” evil politician or something and he was the opposite of Sheriff Taylor. He was very good at that part! So much so that I disliked him for a bit. 😂

Definitely find “A Face in the Crowd”. Co-stars Patricia Neal and she’s also very good in it. I give it two snaps up in a circle (dating myself with that reference).

Edited to add, Andy also played an urban priest who helps troubled runaway young people in the made-for-TV movie version of “Go Ask Alice”. An interesting part for him though it’s pretty short.
