Elwyn Brooks White (1899 – 1985) was an American writer. For more than fifty years, he was a contributor to The New Yorker magazine. He was also a co-author of the English language style guide The Elements of Style. In addition, he wrote books for children, including Stuart Little (1945), Charlotte’s Web (1952), and The Trumpet of the Swan (1970). In a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers, Charlotte’s Web came in first in their poll of the top one hundred children’s novels.

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”

“A library is a good place to go when you feel unhappy, for there, in a book, you may find encouragement and comfort. A library is a good place to go when you feel bewildered or undecided, for there, in a book, you may have your question answered. Books are good company, in sad times and happy times, for books are people - people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book."

“But real life is only one kind of life—there is also the life of the imagination.”

“I would feel more optimistic about a bright future for man if he spent less time proving that he can outwit Nature and more time tasting her sweetness and respecting her seniority.”

“A writer who waits for ideal conditions under which to work will die without putting a word to paper.”

“When an American family becomes separated from its toothbrushes and combs and pajamas for a few hours it considers that it has had quite an adventure.”

“If you don’t know how to pronounce a word, say it loud!" (William Strunk) … Why compound ignorance with inaudibility?”

I can relate to that first one. Not in improving The world, but my world (home and home life) or doing something enjoyable in the world, be it nature or the arts. I do not often win, my world usually does. 😉
