please note; family is visiting; Perspectives will return in September. -CW

Earl Sidney Weaver (1930 – 2013) was an American professional baseball manager, author, and television broadcaster. After playing in minor league baseball, he became a minor league manager, and then managed in MLB for 17 years with the Baltimore Orioles (1968–82; 1985–86). Weaver’s style of managing was summed up in the quote: " pitching, defense, and the three-run homer ." He did not believe in placing emphasis on “small ball” tactics such as stolen bases, hit and run plays, or sacrifice bunts. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996. He is in the top ten all time for winning percentage and had the American League’s highest win total during the 1970’s. His Oriole’s pitching staff in 1971 was the last to record 4 - 20-game winners.

"A manager’s job is simple. For one hundred sixty-two games you try not to screw up all that smart stuff your organization did last December."

"A manager gets in the Hall of Fame by what his players have done for him"

To keep your job, you fire others or bench them or trade them. You have to do the thinking for 25 guys, and you can’t be too close to any of them. A manager should stay as far away as possible from his players. I don’t know if I said ten words to Frank Robinson in the years he played for me."

"On my tombstone just write, ‘ The sorest loser that ever lived .’"

“The job of arguing with the umpire belongs to the manager not the players, because it won’t hurt the team if he gets thrown out of the game.”

"The only thing I’d ever wanted in my life was to be a major-league ballplayer, but I had to admit to myself that I wasn’t good enough. It broke my heart."

"Playing baseball is fun. If I could play, I’d never retire. But managing is work. It’s constant decisions of whose feelings you want to hurt all the time."

Have a great visit, CW. Look forward to more perspectives in September.
