“Blessed is the man who, having nothing to say, abstains from giving us wordy evidence of the fact.”

“A friend is one to whom one may pour out the contents of one’s heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that gentle hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.”

“It is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view.”

“And certainly, the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it.”

“No evil dooms us hopelessly except the evil we love, and desire to continue in, and make no effort to escape from. ”

“We mortals, men and women, devour many a disappointment between breakfast and dinner-time; keep back the tears and look a little pale about the lips, and in answer to inquiries say, “Oh, nothing!” Pride helps; and pride is not a bad thing when it only urges us to hide our hurts— not to hurt others.”

“Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love - that makes life and nature harmonise. The birds are consulting about their migrations, the trees are putting on the hectic or the pallid hues of decay, and begin to strew the ground, that one’s very footsteps may not disturb the repose of earth and air, while they give us a scent that is a perfect anodyne to the restless spirit. Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."

Aha! The second one, I remember finding in high school when searching “Bartletts familiar quotations,” a favorite hobby of mine during the lunch period. ☺️

That sounds very familiar to me. Growing up we had a 20 volume World Book Encyclopedia (which is now on a book shelf in my dining room). In spare moments I would pull a book at random and read whatever I flipped open to. I still do this, actually. 🙂

I successfully passed the quote collecting gene on to my daughter. She texts us good quotes every so often.
