Golda Meir (born Golda Mabovitch ; 1898 – 1978) was an Israeli teacher, stateswoman, politician and the fourth Prime Minister of Israel. Born in Kiev, she immigrated to the United States as a child with her family in 1906, and was educated there, becoming a teacher. After marrying, she and her husband immigrated to then Mandatory Palestine in 1921, settling on a kibbutz . Meir was elected prime minister of Israel on March 17, 1969, after serving as Minister of Labour and Foreign Minister. The world’s fourth and Israel’s first and only woman to hold the office, she has been described as the “Iron Lady” of Israeli politics, a term later applied to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion used to call Meir " the best man in the government "; she was often portrayed as the “strong-willed, straight-talking, grey-bunned grandmother of the Jewish people.” Meir resigned as prime minister in 1974, the year following the Yom Kippur War. She died in 1978 of lymphoma.

“You’ll never find a better sparring partner than adversity.”

“A leader who doesn’t hesitate before he sends his nation into battle is not fit to be a leader.”

“Not being beautiful was the true blessing. Not being beautiful forced me to develop my inner resources. The pretty girl has a handicap to overcome. ”

“Let me tell you the one thing I have against Moses. He took us forty years into the desert in order to bring us to the one place in the Middle East that has no oil!”

“A story once went the rounds of Israel to the effect that Ben-Gurion described me as ‘the only man’ in his cabinet. What amused me about is that he (or whoever invented the story) thought that this was the greatest compliment that could be paid to a woman. I very much doubt that any man would have been flattered if I had said about him that he was the only woman in the government!”

“My dear, old age is like an airplane flying in a storm. Once you’re in it there’s nothing you can do. You can’t stop a plane, you can’t stop a storm, you can’t stop time. So you might as well take it easy, with wisdom.”

“Don’t be humble. You’re not that great. ”

She was also a staunch defender of Pope Pius XII, asserting that he was the only European figure with real power who did his very best to prevent the Holocaust.

She seems like she was a great leader.
