Jordan Bernt Peterson (born June 12, 1962) is a Canadian clinical psychologist and a professor of psychology at the University of Toronto. His main areas of study are in abnormal, social, and personality psychology, with a particular interest in the psychology of religious and ideological belief and the assessment and improvement of personality and performance. In 2016 Peterson released a series of YouTube videos criticizing political correctness and the Canadian government’s Bill C-16, " An Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act and the Criminal Code ". The Act added “gender identity and expression” as a prohibited ground of discrimination, which Peterson characterized as an introduction of compelled speech into law. He subsequently received significant media coverage, attracting both support and criticism.

"If we’re going to think at all then we risk being offensive."

“It took untold generations to get you where you are. A little gratitude might be in order. If you’re going to insist on bending the world to your way, you better have your reasons.”

“You cannot be protected from the things that frighten you and hurt you, but if you identify with the part of your being that is responsible for transformation, then you aare always the equal, or more than the equal of the things that frighten you.”

“In the West, we have been withdrawing from our tradition-, religion- and even nation-centred cultures, partly to decrease the danger of group conflict. But we are increasingly falling prey to the desperation of meaninglessness, and that is no improvement at all.”

“You don’t get to choose not to pay a price, you only get to choose which price you pay”

“And if you think tough men are dangerous, wait until you see what weak men are capable of.”

“We believe that in reducing the scope and importance of our errors, we are properly humble; in truth, we are merely unwilling to bear the weight of our true responsibility.”

I’m not sure I’ve fully understood what Peterson means in that final quote about our errors, but I’m reminded of something my boss said when I began my first job: “The only person who can truthfully say he has never made a mistake is someone who has never done any work.”
