Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832 – 1898), better known by his pen name Lewis Carroll , was an English writer of world-famous children’s fiction, notably Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass . He was noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. The poems Jabberwocky and The Hunting of the Snark are classified in the genre of literary nonsense. He was also a mathematician, photographer, and church deacon. Carroll came from a family of high-church Anglicans, and developed a long relationship with Christ Church, Oxford, where he lived for most of his life as a scholar and teacher. Alice Liddell, daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, Henry Liddell, is widely identified as the original little girl for Alice in Wonderland , though Carroll always denied this.
“I know who I WAS when I got up this morning, but I think I must have been changed several times since then”
“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. Nothing would be what it is, because everything would be what it isn’t. And contrary wise, what is, it wouldn’t be. And what it wouldn’t be, it would. You see?”
“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”
“One of the deep secrets of life is that all that is really worth the doing is what we do for others.”
“If everybody minded their own business, the world would go around a great deal faster than it does.”
“Imagination is the only weapon in the war against reality.”
“Everything is funny, if you can laugh at it.”
Bonus quote (a personal favorite) “Yes, that’s it! Said the Hatter with a sigh, it’s always tea time.”
