Today’s quotes are from Friedrich von Schiller, 1759-1805. A German poet, philosopher, physician, historian and playwright, he is remembered today as the restorer of the dramatic theater in Germany at a time when it had been in steep decline. His collaborations with Goethe left an imprint on German society and culture that had him voted, in 2008 by the arts channel, Arte , the second most important playwright in Europe, after Shakespeare.

“Our age is enlightened… How is it, then, that we still remain barbarians?”

“Against stupidity the gods themselves contend in vain.”

“The voice of the majority is no proof of justice”

“Be noble minded! Our own heart, and not other men’s opinions of us, forms our true honor.”

“Did you think the lion was sleeping because he didn’t roar?”

“There is no such thing as chance; and what seems to us merest accident springs from the deepest source of destiny.”

“Let not thy heart cling to the things which for so short a time deck out thy life. Let him who has, learn to lose, and him who is happy, familiarize himself with what may give pain.”
