Sir Thomas Sean Connery (born 25 August 1930) is a Scottish retired actor and producer who has won an Academy Award, two BAFTA Awards (one being a BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award), and three Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award and a Henrietta Award. He became famous for portraying the character James Bond in film, starring in seven Bond films, between 1962 and 1983. Connery has been polled in The Sunday Herald as “The Greatest Living Scot” and in a EuroMillions survey as “Scotland’s Greatest Living National Treasure”. He was voted by People magazine as both the “Sexiest Man Alive" in 1989 and the "Sexiest Man of the Century” in 1999. He received a lifetime achievement award in the U.S. with a Kennedy Center Honor in 1999. Connery was knighted in the 2000 New Year Honours for services to film drama.

"I am not an Englishman, I was never an Englishman, and I don’t ever want to be one. I am a Scotsman! I was born a Scotsman and I will always be one."

"I met my wife through playing golf. She is French and couldn’t speak English and I couldn’t speak French, so there was little chance of us getting involved in any boring conversations – that’s why we got married really quickly."

"The Irish seem to have more fire about them than the Scots…I never trashed a hotel room or did drugs."

"Love may not make the world go round, but I must admit that it makes the ride worthwhile."

"I have always hated that d— James Bond. I’d like to kill him."

"There’s a lot of fantasy about what Scotland is, like the shortbread tins and that sort of thing."

"Perhaps I’m not a good actor, but I would be even worse at doing anything else."

I wouldn’t have ever thought he hated Bond!
Not with all the money Bond made for him. lol
Yeah, I wonder about the authenticity of that quote. I mean, he came back to the role in 1983 with the “unofficial” Bond film Never Say Never Again, 12 years after his last official entry, Diamonds Are Forever. Why would he do that if he hated the character?

Assuming the quote is accurate, I can see him making certain demands of the character before accepting the most recent role. I found this entry regarding his current marriage (the first ended in 1973),

The name is Bond, James Bond. Sean Connery certainly imbibed a bit of his on-screen persona with his rogue charm and dashing looks. Men wanted to be him and women wanted to be with him, but there was only one woman who held the key to his heart — his wife of 45 years, Micheline Roquebrune Connery. And he is still head over heels in love with her.

Regarding the quote in question, he may never have been comfortable with the Bond image, which does not surprise me.
