For my American friends, including my wife, it’s time for that “other” Thanksgiving. When our kids were young we always gave them this day off from school. I remember well coming home from work on a darkening afternoon to the smell of roasting turkey, fresh baked buns, pumpkin pie, and finding the kids all drawing or playing games on the dining room table. It was a day to watch our Dallas Cowboys play football and, in those years, generally winning. So here are some Thanksgiving thoughts from a variety of fine folks.

“After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relations.”
-Oscar Wilde

“I like football. I find its an exciting strategic game. Its a great way to avoid conversation with your family at Thanksgiving.”
-Craig Ferguson

“Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Football half-time takes twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.”
-Erma Bombeck

“Thanksgiving Day, a function which originated in New England two or three centuries ago when those people recognized that they really had something to be thankful for – annually, not oftener – if they had succeeded in exterminating their neighbors, the Indians, during the previous twelve months instead of getting exterminated by their neighbors, the Indians. Thanksgiving Day became a habit, for the reason that in the course of time, as the years drifted on, it was perceived that the exterminating had ceased to be mutual and was all on the white man’s side, consequently on the Lord’s side; hence it was proper to thank the Lord for it and extend the usual annual compliments.”
-Mark Twain

“One moment of prayer, of weak worship, confused contrition, tepid thanksgiving, or pitiful petition will bring us closer to God than all the books of theology in the world.”
-Peter Kreeft

“Thanksgiving was nothing more than a pilgrim-created obstacle in the way of Christmas; a dead bird in the street that forced a brief detour.”
-Augusten Burroughs

“America has developed a pie tradition unequivocally and unapologetically at the sweet end of the scale, and at no time is this better demonstrated than at Thanksgiving.”
-Janet Clarkson

Thanksgiving is an emotional holiday. People travel thousands of miles to be with people they only see once a year. And then discover once a year is way too often.

-Johnny Carson

I had those days, but no longer. Now I truly give thanks for the many blessings I have. I also talk to our Lord about some of the work we have left to do within my family. I’m thankful He listens.

Oh, and as an Eagles can, I’m glad the Cowboys lost. 🎉

I don’t care about American football at all, so that’s part of Thanksgiving that doesn’t really appeal to me. I do, however care about pecan pie, because it’s delicious. remember, I live fairly close to most of my immediate family, so the people I see on Thanksgiving are people I see every week.

Pecan pie rocks. I (fortunately) bought a small pecan pie and ended up eating all of it!

I’m glad I only eat it a few times a year, because I would weigh a hundred more pounds if I didn’t.
