Saint Valentine was a widely recognized 3rd-century Roman saint, commemorated in Christianity on February 14. From the High Middle Ages his Saints’ Day has been associated with a tradition of courtly love. He is also a patron saint of epilepsy. Saint Valentine was a clergyman – either a priest or a bishop – in the Roman Empire who ministered to persecuted Christians. He was martyred and his body buried at a Christian cemetery on the Via Flaminia close to the Ponte Milvio to the north of Rome, on February 14, which has been observed as the Feast of Saint Valentine (Saint Valentine’s Day) since 496 AD.

“In a world full of temporary things
you are a perpetual feeling.”

- Sanober Khan

“If my Valentine you won’t be,
I’ll hang myself on your Christmas tree.”
- Ernest Hemingway

“When I ask you to be my valentine, I’m not asking you to love me. I’m simply asking you to accept tokens of my love for you.”
- Richelle E. Goodrich

“It was February sixth: eight days until Valentine’s Day. I was dateless, as usual, deep in the vice grip of unrequited love. It was bad enough not having a boyfriend for New Year’s Eve. Now I had to cope with Valentine datelessness, feeling consummate social pressure from every retailer in America who stuck hearts and cupids in their windows by January second to rub it in.”
-Joan Bauer

“Today’s Valentine’s Day. There’s a whole day devoted solely to love. Does that make any sense? Nah. Love makes us all crazy. But it’s fun too.”
- Lisa Greenwald

“Valentine’s day: one day day to celebrate love, friendship, give hugs and say sweet things to your loved ones? C’mon, I need an entire year of that!”
- Rodolfo Peon

“Love is the only emotion strong enough to sweep us off our feet, but remain unmoved when we are knocked to our knees. And if I am willing to embrace the former but flee from the latter, I’ve confused love with infatuation.”
-Craig D. Lounsbrough

“When you love someone you do not love them all the time, in exactly the same way, from moment to moment. It is an impossibility. It is even a lie to pretend to. And yet this is exactly what most of us demand. We have so little faith in the ebb and flow of life, of love, of relationships. We leap at the flow of the tide and resist in terror its ebb. We are afraid it will never return. We insist on permanency, on duration, on continuity; when the only continuity possible, in life as in love, is in growth, in fluidity - in freedom”
~ Leo Buscaglia

A very apt description of the dreadful insecurities I suffered as an awkward teen who was afraid to even speak to a girl. 🙂
