Vincent Joseph Flynn (April 6, 1966 – June 19, 2013) was an American author of political thriller novels surrounding the story of fictional character Mitch Rapp. Flynn died in 2013 after three years with prostate cancer. He was one of seven children born to Terry and Kathleen Flynn, and a graduate of Saint Thomas Academy (1984) and the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota with a B.A in Economics (1989). After graduating, Flynn went to work for Kraft Foods as an account and sales marketing specialist. In 1991, he left Kraft to pursue a career as an aviator with the United States Marine Corps. One week before leaving for Officer Candidate School he was medically disqualified from the Marine Aviation Program. Earlier in his life he overcame the difficulties of dyslexia through a concentrated program of reading and writing. Novels continue to be published under his name by author Kyle Mills.

“It was war, and in war the truth was almost always the first casualty.”

“The Saudis think that God is on their side, and people who think God is on their side are capable of the most inhumane acts.”

“That’s the problem with this whole country; vast prosperity. No one has any real problems anymore. Ninety percent of the politicians in this town either think there’s no war on terror, or if we’d just be nice to these zealots they’ll leave us alone. Well, that ain’t going to happen. The Huns are circling, and we’re sitting around arguing about entitlements and prayer and guns and global warming and all kinds of b.s. These idiots will eventually wake up to the threat, but by then it will be too late."

“Underestimating one’s enemy was a classic tactical mistake — one that was usually born out of stupidity or arrogance or both."

“[He] had seen firsthand the horrific results of appeasement. It was a path chosen by feeble-minded people who were morally incapable of confronting evil."

“…men who were frightened to read the entire Koran because they knew they would be confronted with the words of a prophet who would never condone their actions.”

“…he also discovered a correlation between their opinions and the conviction with which they stated them. It seemed that the less someone knew, the more forcefully they tried to state their case.”

I’m intrigued. From what book did you take the quote? I have looked up both Vince Flynn and Kyle Mills. Did they know each other? Both were born in 1966 other than that I can’t find a commonality. A reviewer said about Kyle Mills continuing on Flynn’s series of the Mitch Rapp character that he had captured the voice of Vince Flynn in Enemy of the State. If I wanted to get involved with this series would you suggest starting back with Vince Flynn? He died so young, only 47 years old and yet quite the prolific author. It’s nice that his character lives on with the writings of Kyle Mills.

. From what book did you take the quote?
The quotes came from a site called Goodreads and represent several different books of the series. I haven’t read them all in order but there is some continuity one misses from doing this. However, I get them from the public library so just have to read them as they become available. I’ve enjoyed them all despite the skewed order in which they came to me. I generally get four or five at a time and read them in the order of publication. I received a voicemail notification from the library of another one in just as I began typing this. 😃

According to an interview with Mills it was Flynn himself who asked him if he could carry on with the last book he had started. Mills was honored to have been asked and assumed there was some sort of outline to work with. He discovered, though, that Flynn did not use outlines but just sat down and began writing. What he received was not the partial manuscript he expected, but a single sheet with a couple of lines typed on it. This presented a challenge but he has so far, I believe, produced four more books with Flynn’s name on them and each has remained true to the original character and story lines.

If you like political intrigue and seeing the bad guys go down hard, this is a fine series. Great for working off the frustration one gets from observing the current state of national and international affairs.

Yes, I like political intrigue along the lines of Ken Follett, Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum but haven’t read any of their works in a while. I’ve read Douglas E. Richards books that combine both sci-fy and spy thriller genre. Generally I don’t like the slasher type novels where it is just blood and gore for the sake of killing. But to see the good guy win out in the end and give a proper comeupance to evil, I think that’s great. I’ve got Goodreads on my Kindle but don’t always look at it. Got turned off by some of their monthly offerings. My son uses the local libraries to download books but I haven’t tried it. Amazon Prime offers a free e-book a month to members and have gotten some good ones through that service. The Boy From the Woods by Harlan Coben was one from Prime that I enjoyed. A thriller/crime fiction that was first published March 2020. One of the good things to come out of this crazy year. Have to confess, one reason I liked it is that the central character of his book is a 70 year old female defense attorney who takes no guff! I plan to read more from Coben but might have to take a diversionary escape first with Mitch Rapp. I appreciate your following up on my inquiry.

Tom Clancy and Robert Ludlum are very apt comparisons. I will say that the one Flynn novel that made it to the big screen, American Assassin, was a serious disappointment as a movie. But that’s just my personal take. 😀

I agree that movies don’t live up to the hype given and are disappointing after having enjoyed an excellent novel. Rarely do I see any current movies and when I have in the past it was at either my son’s or daughter’s home. I haven’t visited them since Feb 2020 and unfortunately won’t be any time soon. American Assassin written by Flynn as a Mitch Rapp prequel is the one that I now have on my Kindle’s wish list along with The Enigma Cube by Douglas E. Richards. I’m deciding on which one but already have 2 other e-books already downloaded. Although I’m by myself, boredom is never a problem for me. Always something to do, cook/bake, discover, read, pray about, watch old classic movies or yes go crazy listening to the “news”!

Another very similar author to Flynn is Jack Carr whose first book, The Terminal List, I just finished reading this afternoon. He has a total of four if you’re not familiar with him. Carr was an actual Navy Seal Sniper and brings a very real touch to the story.

I’ll have to check him out as I am not familiar with his books. Fact that he was a Navy Seal would bring authenticity to his writings not that I’d be able to tell the difference! Thanks for the tip.
