it says this forum is for Controversy, so this seems the best place.
This thread is to talk about the Peter the Aleut, Eastern Orthodox martyr,
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_the_Aleut
who according to history (that seems to be real, not fabricated) was viciously tortured and killed because he was Orthodox, and wouldn’t convert to Catholicism.
I want to know what kind of priests would do this, and why the scandal it causes to Catholic-Orthodox relations isn’t more known.
apparently he is sometimes paired with St. Andrew Bobola, who was terribly tortured by Cossacks (it would make sense if these Cossacks were Orthodox, but I don’t know if they were.)
So I guess I’m asking for opinions.

Well, he was tortured and killed by the Spanish in California. It’s quite possible, I would think, that there was a language problem between the Spaniards and this guy from the Alleutian Islands. Keep in mind, too, an historical context. People in those days were cruel anyway, and whoever did this wasn’t following Catholic doctrine, but acting on their own. We have had sinners in the heirarchy from the very beginning, with the Apostles. (Judas betrayed Jesus, Peter denied Jesus three times, and the rest, except for John, deserted Him in his hour of need like cowards.)
