Oh, no… so you’re a Protestant or a dissident Catholic… :nope:

How I wish that were the case.
Martin777 said:that is a doctrine of man, and foreign to the scriptures.
Martin777 said:…examine those who graciously tell you they have experienced the new birth. Find out why some long to lead others to Christ, while others seek to perpetuate an institution…whether it be Catholic,Episcopal, Methodist…whatever.
Martin777 said:I rarely think about Luther. His primary contribution to the church was to publicly discover the same thing Wesley discovered–how to be born again through fiath alone in the finished work of the cross.
Martin777 said:I agree souls in heaven are alive. But there is no need to pray to anyone except God, through the Holy Spirit he has given us.
It would be interesting to know how many of them were actually regenerate!
My good friend, why did you assume I am not catholic?
Ahh … but this is incorrect. There is no difference. If you study the doctrine of grace you will see that works confirm that our faith is real, that it is the genuine article. But it is the grace of God, through faith, that produces genuine works. I serve God and have surrendered my life to Him, not in order to get to heaven, but rather out of gratitude for the fact that he has saved me forever out of His mercy and grace. Until he dealt with my sin through the cross, I could never serve him freely. Now I can.
I see the issue now.Jesus summed the issue up when he said, …
True, but that is the default conclusion based upon what you said. One who does not accept the promises of Jesus to the Church is not Catholic. That’s not what I said.
I truly accept all the promises of Jesus to the Church! “In Him is the amen”True, but that is the default conclusion based upon what you said. One who does not accept the promises of Jesus to the Church is not Catholic.![]()
It would be hard to choose a favorite, but in the light of the thread topic, I would say they are the ones that confirm that the Church will not err in teaching faith and morals. The infallibility of the church is based upon Jesus’ promises through the HS. It is this divine element that prevents error, just as the Divine inspiration of Scripture prevented fallible men from making any errors when writing it.I truly accept all the promises of Jesus to the Church! “In Him is the amen”
What’s your favorite promise?
I think one of my favorite promises is this: “My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me, and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish.”It would be hard to choose a favorite, but in the light of the thread topic, I would say they are the ones that confirm that the Church will not err in teaching faith and morals. Jesus sent His spirit to guide us into all Truth:
John 16:13-15
" When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you."
John 14:18-19
18 "I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you.
Jesus did not leave us orphaned, but sent the Spirit to guide us into all Truth.
Matt 16:18-19
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
The gates of hell will not prevail. Teaching error causes people to pass through the gates of hell. To prevail over the gates, Jesus keeps the teaching of the Church pure.
Then do you subscribe to the modern notion that a sheep who refuses to respond to His voice whas never a “true sheep” in the first place?I think one of my favorite promises is this: “My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me, and I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish.”
Regarding the first question I have two thoughts: First John does say in one place that “They went out from among us because they were not of us.” Second, Jesus says if right now you are His sheep, He will see to it that you never perish and that no one plucks you out of His hand! What a marvelous promise. Then do you subscribe to the modern notion that a sheep who refuses to respond to His voice whas never a “true sheep” in the first place?
Do you believe that those persons who embraced the notion of Peter having primacy among the Apostles and that there is an Aposolic succession were never true sheep?
Yes, there certainly are some wolves in sheeps clothing.Regarding the first question I have two thoughts: First John does say in one place that “They went out from among us because they were not of us.”
Indeed, it is. But it does not mean that the sheep cannot jump out of His hand and run off. some of these repent and return, some do not.Second, Jesus says if right now you are His sheep, He will see to it that you never perish and that no one plucks you out of His hand! What a marvelous promise.
Yes. I fear that there are many “lost sheep”, who do believe they trust in Him, yet their lives do not reflect the conformity to His image that one would expect. On the second question, the only true test of a sheep is that they are trusting in Jesus the Shepherd alone for their salvation. If they truly do trust in Him, then their life should show fruit!
Your wish has come true (actually, it was already true in advance of your wish)! How I wish that were the case.
