Greetings to all.

A friend and I are planning to travel to Philadelphia to attend the Mass said by Pope Francis on Sept. 27. Neither of us has had such an opportunity before.

Does Pope Francis say the whole Mass? Will there be an opportunity to get rosaries blessed for friends and family back home (a time to hold them up to receive a blessing)? Will they need EMHCs? Just the thought of all the logistics of making a Mass for so many people possible makes my head spin.

Any advice? I am already nervous at the thought of such a crowd.

Thanks and God bless.

I went to the Papal Mass in Los Angles with John Paul II. He celebrated the entire Mass (and gave the homily in English). We did not have the opportunity to have our items blessed, but maybe Pope Francis will do it. There were PLENTY of EMHC’s but not enough, because there was only a certain time allowed for communion and people at the end of the lines were turned away. It is a huge logistical challenge, but the dioceses know what to do and everything will be fine. BTW I needed a ticket to get in. They were free, but no one was allowed in without one, so you might want to check and get them early. I hope you make it; It will be an amazing, memorable experience, to be in the same place with thousands and thousands of your Catholic brothers and sisters!

I will be there too!

I’d bring the rosaries just in case. I have no idea how they’re going to work this but I’m sure they’ll do a great job as usual. I wondered about the EMHC situation myself. I figure my friends and I will be pushed back at least 10 blocks from where the Mass is being held, so we will probably end up watching from a jumbo screen.

Enjoy it! It will be a once in a lifetime experience.

For everybody who will be coming to Philadelphia:
Book your hotel NOW if you haven’t already. Hotels are filling up as far away as Reading and Lancaster.
Plan ahead how you will get into the city and to Logan Square for the Mass. Travel by car within the city will be extremely restricted, so allow at least triple the normal travel time from your hotel.
Keep checking www.septa.org for updates on public transportation during the papal visit.
Any further questions feel free to private message me.

Thanks. Luckily, my friend has family in the area. I’m sure transportation and the crowd will be our big challenges.

I went to the Pope John Paul II mass in Philly in 1979 and will be going to the papal mass in Philly again in September–woot!

I never knew the thing about holding up rosaries. Good to know.

There weren’t enough priests at a Papal Mass in Las Angeles to distribute Holy Communion? Are you sure that people were turned away because of the allotted time or was it because they ran out of Hosts?

When I attended the Papal Mass in Detroit with now St Pope John Paul II, there were plenty of EMHCs (mainly clergy, deacons, nuns, and perhaps even some lay people). There were 80,000 or so in the Silverdome, and I certainly was able to receive Communion. I have no idea of the logistics ahead of time for such a large gathering but I am sure the organizers planned far ahead of time.

I went to +JP-II Papal Mass here in Detroit, and +Benedict’s Mass in Wash DC in 2008.

In both cases, the Pope asked the faithful to hold up any appropriate personal items that they wanted to be blessed. And then the Pope blessed them.
