When Abba is spelled backwards, it is still Abba. That settles the issue of the name.😃

Abba,

What is the very first thing you would say about philosophy?
You don’t say anything about Philosophy first up.

You ask “What is Philosophy”.

Socrates had this to say -
There will be no end to the troubles of states, or of humanity itself, till philosophers become kings in this world, or till those we now call kings and rulers really and truly become philosophers, and political power and philosophy thus come into the same hands.
Now, why did he say that?

And if you don’t know who Socrates was/is, you shouldn’t be here!

🙂
Yeah, StrawberryJam! 🙂

I try not to use too many pictures. 😃

What do you think would be good categories or topic for us to cover? I need a bit of a review with the logic. Of course, we all know logic, but, it’s the names attached to the process that I forget and in general it would be good to review. The other day, MindOverMatter2, used the word syllogism and had to Google it. 😛 😊 Hey, out of sight out of mind. I have been changing diapers. It would be nice to get a refresher course.
Mary was changing diapers as well, and teaching Jesus his prayers.

The topics to cover are limitless, and that is what is so wonderful about it.

Just a reminder for those who want to join the thread and don’t post here normally, look over the rules that govern this sub forum carefully. This especially applies to non catholics.

I’ve always liked to discuss areas that I have genuine interest in. Looking forward to hearing what you end up covering.

As for your username, promethius has a very excellent point.

Now I don’t think anyone should object to your exegesis on the name (Protestants could learn something from that)… really, I can see someone accepting almost everything you said in that post. I even think someone should accept your spiritual insights of calling God by the name of Father and even Daddy.
I’d like to retract what I said, namely, that someone shouldn’t object to her exegesis. Though I still think that some Protestants could learn a thing or two from her exegesis, since there are some who do get all knotted-up about calling someone ‘father’. But all of this misses the point and the reason why one would object to the contested username.
But using it as your name seems disrespectful. Wasn’t there someone on these forums that used to go around with the name ‘God’? Pretty sure he was banned. But ‘aveMaria’ is definitely alright because it means “Hail Mary”.
Oh, and the moderators aren’t perfect. Nor could or should they micromanage everything.
But it seems you’ve been around these forums for a while, so it looks like folks will have to put up with it.
Ciao,
Michael
I still stand by what I say here. The particular scenario is confusing because, if intended as an exclamation as the OP states, it is not signified as such. ‘AveMaria’ is different and easily identified while the case at hand is not.

But I will keep the OP’s intentions in mind, for what it is worth.

As for the original thread topic: definitely start a new thread and keep the title in a consistent format. As for where to start: perhaps you should ask the question what is philosophy instead of jumping into formal/informal logic and fallacies.

It’s important to know what you are doing before you do it–at least in the logical order.

A wonderful point, however, your exegesis is incorrect. Protestants do not call their pastors father because they share your confusion about the meaning of the term “Abba”.

What we call priests is not a derivative of the word “Abba”. It is a derivative of the word Pater (latin) or Ho Pater (greek), or Ahb (arabic), or Av (hebrew), etc. These are formal non-honorifics. These use father as a title.

As I already stated, the word Abba is a combination of the greek familiar word “ba” meaning “dad” or “daddy” with the aramaic honorific A- which converts the greek term into a proper name… not a title. In other words, the word Abba is a aramaic-greek word which is NOT a title, NOT something we would call a man. It is the name of God, like, as I said, the Tetragammon.

Incorrect historically. The people who were supposed to be called “Abba” were the Caesars. No scribe or pharisee would have wanted to be called Abba because 1) it is a name, not a title and 2) it is a greek/aramaic word, not a hebrew title… which would be spurned by the scribes and the pharisees. Jews who wanted to go as “father” would have requested to be called “ha’av”, not Abba.

Nonetheless, when you call a priest father, you are not calling him “Abba”, but rather pater, a latin title, not a proper name.

That is correct, but incorrectly applied. Abba is not a word for the title father (it means a proper name, not a title), hence why Paul does not use Abba when referring to spiritual fatherhood.

I think the mistake you are making is thinking that there was only one greek/aramaic/hebrew word for father. That is incorrect. There were MANY terms in the time of Christ for father, but ONE which was a proper name and which was forbidden to be used for mere men.

I’m not disagreeing that we call God by the name Abba. I’m disagreeing that we should ever be asked to call any man by this name for any reason.

Except that Abba is only a word that APPEARS in the aramaic and greek languages. It is a combination of the two. Ba is correct for the familiar form of “father” in greek, and this is what I would call MY father, had I grown up in Jesus’ day (unless I were in trouble, then I might address him in greek as “ho pater”). Adding the formal honorific turns it into a personal usage of a formal name… God’s name. Abba does not just mean the title “daddy”, it is formally a NAME.

this is not an argument. The moderators allow an atheist to go with the handle “non-serviam”… the blasphemous words of Satan when presented the image of Christ in God’s plan. I sincerely doubt that if they’ll allow that, that they’re strictly looking at your name either.

Fair enough, and that is my intention. I just wanted you to understand that my refusal to call you “Abba” is not out of disrespect for you, but out of ultimate respect for God.
I’d like to politely disagree with your understanding of the title/name Abba. Where did you get the idea that its a hybrid greek and aramaic word? Ab is the Hebrew root and is more likely to be semetic than hellenic. Abba has consistently been translated as the Aramaic diminutive - daddy or papa.

Can I be here if I can never remember if it is Socrates, Plato, and then Aristotle or if it is Aristotle, Plato, and then Socrates?

Small suggestion. What about a thread “Philosophy for Beginners – Help Needed”
The OP could be an answer to your question “What is Philosophy?” in 200 words or less.🙂

Here is a question I have about Philosophy, even though I stole the wording from elsewhere on the web:

Can you give me a list of some things that philosophers have settled and reached agreement upon, say, to the extent that physicists agree on Newtonian mechanics and geologists agree upon plate tectonics?

I am very interested in seeing this philosophy discussion get off the ground. What a shame people keep side-tracking it. Jam may have a point, and it may need to be rethreaded. Focus people!!! :eek:

This is a really interesting question. First of all, what I see here in repsonse to your question refers to advances in Scholastic philosophy, otherwise it is too broad (to include Enlightenment philosophy, postmodern philosophy, analytic philosophy, for example, would be like tyring to ask “what has the Catholic Church, KFC, the Democrats and Canada agrreed on?”).

Here are just a few juicy things off the top of my head that Scholastic philosophy, in general, agrees on (in no particular order, just randomly spewing):

(1) That there are first evident principles upon which all knowledge is based.
(2) That God exists and whose existence can be known through the light of natural reason;
(3) All our knowledge is derived from sense knowledge;
(4) sense knowledge is different from intellectual knowlegde;
(5) That nothing created exists without a cause;
(6) That there are at least five kinds of cause;
(7) That philosophy is divided into the practical and speculative
(8) That man is composed of powers and faculties, which in turn are determined to objects through qualities or dispositions;
(9) That the will, of necessity, desires happiness and in this regard it is not free
(10) That the power to think. know and love is immaterial
(11) That ‘being’ is convertible with ‘good’

And on and on. Quite a lot of breakthroughs actually…:cool:

Hello everyone, 🙂

We are pretty much done here. This thread has obtained it’s purpose, which was to find out if there would be an interest in having discussions covering the basics of philosophy. The answer is, yes. 🙂

I will start another thread now presenting our series and the syllabus. Yes, we are going to have a syllabus as we need structure in our discussions. Remember, we are all in this together, so keep making recommendations, participate by making comments, analysis, and posing questions, or smileys. Let’s do this! 👍
