Philosophy: Is not apologetics

I agree with Ani (for once).

I would also say that philosophy is necessary for apologetics to exist. Without theology and reason, you have no tools. Francis Schaeffer used a term “pre-evangelism”: before you could tell a man Christ set him free from sin, he must understand what sin is. Before you can defend the faith, you must be able to understand what it is (not that I in the least fault you there).

How are you all going to get better at evangelism without knowing what the holes in your arguments are and, perhaps, finding ways to fill them?

Oh please don’t answer that! Please! :o I think it will be very beneficial for the apologetics folks and the philosophy folks to go to their respective corners and hang up their gloves.

The idea behind putting the prefix ‘philosophy’ on the philosophy threads is so that the mods have a quick way to quantify the need for a separate Philosophy Forum.

If we have a separate Philosophy Forum, then the apologetics folks won’t be ‘distracted’ by our threads.

For our part, we’re hoping that we’ll present less of a vulnerable target for some folks who say they are doing apologetics but whose methodology looks more like:

strawman > tautology > faulty analogy > ad hominem > personal attack > pleading special case > false swan song > new thread all over again.

Some of that has crept over already. 😦 Yikes.

Though these questions might be interesting, wouldn’t it make sense to pose these philosophy questions in a manner more directly linked to a theological question considering we are all posting in a Catholic Apologetics forum?

Name one philosophy thread that does not deal with a theological question.

(So here we go with the first strawman.)

Please post philosophy threads in the BackFence forum.

This is the Apologetics forum.

Thanks. :tiphat:

I’m with Randy; I’d like to see them elsewhere.

Philosophy may be the “theory” behind Apologetics, but there are some of us who are far more interested in the pragmatics thereof than the theory underlying them.

I think there is a place for both. I wish we had a separate philosophy forum. Jemfinch, I feel like I’m experiencing deja vu 🙂

Philosophy, in the BackFence??? The “Love of Wisdom”, at the back* of the bus???* It should be Front and Center.👍

Please remember that complaints are best directed to me via BPR.

Non apologetics threads are subject to being moved to more appropriate places.
