Apparently the mass was at 7:30am which makes the numbers even more impressive.

Only vernacular for those who speak spanish.

I think the introduction of readings and homilies in the vernacular were not what Pope St Pius V first codified in the Mass.

Regardless of what your opinion and what the Pope’s opinion is, if they ever went back to the “traditional Latin Mass” you would see Mass attendance drop significantly which in turn means less money for the Church and more Church’s closing. It is true that mass attendance is already on the decline but going back to the priest facing away from the people would not help things. All you have to do is look at attendence of the Latin Mass’s they currently have. They are hardly any people that show up now.
I truly feel sorry for those who are so bitter and hate the Traditional Church and Traditional Mass so much that they invent statements like the one above to justify their hatred.

Oh well, I guess we will just have to add Phoenix to the list of places where the faithful “hardly show up” at the Traditional Mass 👋

And you take the notion that the original writer hated the Traditional Church (really, there’s not a Traditional Church, there’s just the Church) and the Traditional Mass from where precisely in the passage you quoted? Phoenix is a large diocese. One thousand people isn’t a huge chunk of it’s communicants. That said, one thousand should certainly be able to support a weekly (or even more frequent) Mass in Latin. I echo the commendations to the Bishop, who seems to be working hard to shepherd his people, and congratulate the people who treasure the old Mass and now have, I hope, what HHJPII called a “generous application” of it.

That is wonderful. If you can get 1000 people to church on Sunday, who cares if it is the current missal of the missal of 1962?

And you know what, I miss the days of a packed church that wasn’t Ash Wed. or Easter.

The quote I posted from Petertherock was from another question he had replied to on this forum. And yes, if you read his post it does sound bitter and angry towards the Traditional Mass and those that attend. That is a sentiment I have noticed from quite a few people who are not happy with the fact that a sizeable portion of the faithful would actually like to attend the Traditional Mass. And I said Traditional Church because it is the Traditional Church, not the new and improved version with Liturgical Dancers and Blue Tortilla Chips for the Eucharist, lay members giving homilies, made up Eucharistic and Consecration prayers and everything else that is going on these days.

While the Church wasn’t perfect in the old days, I really don’t think things were like they are now. And I am not saying things are all bad now. There are millions of faithful Catholics doing their best to survive and live a Catholic life in this sinful secular world. There are Priests and Bishops and Cardinals and the Holy Father himself struggling trying their best to keeep the Church intact. But there are those who want the Church deead, impotent and vanquished. And many of them are in the Church. Maybe people that you know. And there are enough abuses and outright crimes going on that all true Catholics should be praying daily to save the church from the evil that has sifted in almost unnoticed. When people denigrate the Traditional Mass in the way some do, when they put down the Mass of our fathers and their fathers and their fathers before them , and say it should be forgotten or worse, it makes my blood boil.

And I ask, why would it be better to forget the Traditional Mass??? Maybe, just maybe there is something special about it. Maybe the Church needs it. Maybe thats why it is still around, because Christ wants it there. I don’t know. But I do know there is no reason to put it down, to degrade it and say better off forgotten.

I live in Phoenix and I can guarantee that the faithful DO show up for the Traditional Mass! Every week about 300 of us show up for the 1:00 pm Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle. We have now been granted mission status with the name of Mater Misericordiae Latin Mass Community. Our Pastor is Fr. Alonzo Saenz (a wonderful, holy priest who,by the way taught himself how to say the Tridentine Mass), who is also Pastor of St. Augustine’s where he now says the Tridentine Mass at his home parish every Sunday at 7:30 am. Also every weekday at 6:30 am. So we are growing!!

God bless Bishop Olmsted!! We love him!

Go Bishop Olmstead…

Strange that only a short distance away, at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Sun, the elderly priest began every day with the rosary followed by the TLM. He refused to say the NO - actually he feared standing in front of his Maker some day having ever said anything but the TLM. For that he has been labeled by other area priests as “not even Catholic”.

As my late mother-in-law used to say when the euchre cards went from bad to good… "The worm has turned"http://forums.catholic-questions.org/images/icons/icon10.gif

Why is it alright to dance around the altar, teach the first communion class that the bread and wine are symbols of Jesus, and create anything you want.
But God forbid you actually want a decent prayer atmosphere, you want a mass that is reverent and you want your kids to be taught Catholicism… you are a nut then.
The nuts have won my friends.
those who want a Roman Catholic church are loosing.
my uncles, pretty traditional folks, I said about altar girls, they said, what can you do, we have 'em?

And you know, it’s not Vatican II that ruined it. The church never said not to go to confession, that the Eucharist was a symbol. Sure the way the sacrements are carried out are different, but the MEANING hasn’t changed.

But many churches have gone too far. If I wanted to attend a Lutheran Service, I’d go two blocks down an go attend with the woman priest.
I’m CATHOLIC. I always liked the rosary before mass. Confession is great.

It isn’t a matter or traditional Versus liberals folks

It IS A MATTER OF THOSE WHO WANT TO ADHERE TO CHURCH TEACHINGS (now called weirdos by the inventors of whim and craziness) AND THOSE WHO WANT TO CONTINUALLY STRAY FROM TEACHINGS OF THE CHURCH.

latin mass or not, we have to get people back to being catholic in their own churches first.

Wow this is exciting, but could be much more historic than what you think. Are you sure this isn’t the first Tridentine Mass with a homily in Spanish in the United States since 1970 ???

Having been raised in a parish with a large Spanish-speaking community and more masses in Spanish than in English, I am deligted to hear that some of my Latin-American brothers and sisters like the Mass in this rite too! I can vouch for the fact that many many people who attend Masses in Spanish are just as sick of the “Mariachi” Masses as English speakers are with Folk guitars!

I would actually love to see something like this in San Antonio. This sounds absolutley marvelous.

Might be a possibility with your new bishop

We now have an indult. I would absolutely love to see an actual parish. I do not believe anybody has approached our new Bishop about this yet.

Id rather clear out the weeds in the garden. If we must prune the tree so that we may bear true fruit instead of this rotten harvest, prune away. If the TLM mass is whats necessary to force orthodoxy back on catholics, then so be it. Something must be done, but preaching about numbers doesnt solve the problem.
