MUST SEE!
I never thought I would see this from a major news network. To get the news on extreme poverty, one really needs to search the other news sources that are usually hidden on the Internet. People in Western societies really need to know of all the needless pain and suffering that goes on in our world.

LOVE! ❤️
Some of that ‘needless pain and suffering’ is in Western soceties’s homes (abuse, drugs, grief, loss of close friends/relatives). 🤷

That is really sad. There isn’t much I can do to help them since I don’t have much money but I do try to help them in various ways. There are two websites I use. One is www.goodsearch.com which you can set up to help any charity you want with a penny per search. It uses the Yahoo search engine. The other is www.greatergood.com which is a site that you can click on buttons for a cause which helps advertisers fund donations for the hungry and others.

Only love can put an end to extreme poverty, and empathy is the precursor to love. Empathy is basically understanding the situation and feelings of others. When a person becomes truly empathic, the inner state of others become our own.

Too often, however, we become apathetic, which is the direct opposite of empathy. Apathy is sad, and un-Christian. Relatively few in our society actually empathize with the poor and outcast.

LOVE! ❤️

Compassion is often trumped by fear and greed, too. How can we share with others when our own situation seems so precarious (fear) or when our own appetites are never satiated (greed)? I am too often guilty on both counts.

I agree…Today I heard about a person talking about the monthly 65$ she spend on his pet insurance and a few days before she displayed in office the clothes bought for her dog…What a pity!
On another instance I heard a girl (religious girl) taking about changing her hair color so that she can "experience"all the crazy things… Wish if such people knew 100s starve to death everyday while the spend money on ridiculous things like hair color experiments and pet insurance

Great video!

That reminds me a lot of the region in Tanzania where I frequently work. Our parish has a sister parish there, and we have crews that go there regularly ( parish medical professionals, engineers like me, etc…), and every two years, larger groups including teens and young adults.

The region has an average income of about $500 per year, a little more than the ‘dollar a day’ mentioned here, but not much more.

I will say, that just about everyone I meet over there is, at their core, happier than we are here. And their spiritual wealth is far greater than your average westerner, which is, I suppose, what really counts.

I go over their with material goods, and do material things, they give me spiritual goods and spiritual wealth.

I am currently in a very poor part of the world, and I have lived and worked in poor countries for some years now. I would agree with your observation that happiness is not related to monetary wealth. However, some basic needs must be met, everywhere. I refer to the requirements for a safe place to sleep, clean water, adequate medical care, basic sanitation facilities, and enough food to stay healthy.

I’ve always said that most people in the US do not have a clue about what poverty really is. What usually is called poverty here tends to be the middle low class where I come from.

Some years ago, I was having dinner with a Turkish family, in Istanbul. A comment was made that even the “poor people” in America are obese. You do not see overweight street people in most place, but you do see them in the US.

So true. I tend to only donate to organizations who help the extremely poor in 3rd World countries, not nationally. There are hardly any people in the US who are truly poor.

Catholic Relief Services is a great organization to donate to if you want to help the really poor people in other countries. You can sign up to donate monthly and there is no minimum. Everything helps.

Obesity is not just caused by eating too much food, but the wrong kind of food. Some poorer families cannot afford fresh fruit, vegetables, etc, and have to rely on cheaper (and less nutritionally sound) foods.

The proliferation of cheap but fatty/salty/sugary foods in recent generations isn’t helping. Two litres of milk is about $4; 2 litres of cola is between $1 and $2. I remember seeing a doc on TV regarding kids who were fat but suffering from malnutrition.

There are also neighbourhoods in North America in major cities where there are no grocery stores with fresh produce within so many square miles. Some charities actually now do grocery runs to these areas, and sell produce and meats out of the back of a refrigerated truck so the locals can have healthy food.

There may be more to the story than what you may immediately see on the surface.

The simplest and most effective way to bring people out of abject poverty is to give them economic freedom, free enterprise, and private property rights.
