Physical descriptions of Jesus, et al

Given the tremendous miracles and teachings Jesus performed, it seems a contemporary would have taken upon himself to record for posterity the physical likeness and qualities of Jesus and some of the others at the time. Am I just thinking in modern ways about celebrity?
