It seems to me in a day and age where we should be more enlightened(at least in some ways) than in the past, we would have a better attitude about how we define need and taking care of the needy. Whether be through governemental or private charities. Iv’e seen it in debates in this forum and I’m surounded by people who think one basic physical needs are met that it’s all thats needed , and noting more is needed. As time goes by and while I’m experiencing my own problems putting me amugnst the needy, I’m getting very sick and tired of this attitude more than Iv’e been bothered by any other trend in my lifetime.
First off we are humans not animals, we are psychological creatures, not just mere physical beings. Humans need purose in their life, they need intellectual stimulation, they need to one extent or another to be loved or at the very least shown someone cares. Not just food ,clothing and shelter. I’m conservative more or less in my views( with some exceptions) and very Catholic myself, but I am seeing a trend from those under my tent of point of views that a full stomach and a shirt on the back are enough to show one’s needs are met One example of a non physical need is that if I didn’t have this internet connection for my intellectual stimulation I need bad, Id be in a white rubber room in a mental hospital somewhere for the rest of my life. But Im told over and over that it isnt a need. Many years ago my mother was a happy lady when she was making her paintings and selling them at art fairs. The money wasn’t great, but she was exressing her self and her creativity with her beautifull paintings while taking in the view of the art of others at the art fairs we went to. But when the family grew larger someone or something planted in her head that she has to be more survivalistic and meeting the children’s physical needs was all important and made everyother aspect of life not important in the least, and with few exceptions she hasn’t been a happy person since. God said in Genesis be fruitfull and multiply. While us Catholics and Christians have been good at the multplying part, fuitfullness especially in relating to fellow humans has gone out the window. God didn’t say survive and multiply , he said be fruitfull and multiply. It’s high time we start using our talents and helping the less furtunate unlock the ability to use their talents. Lets stop relegating the less fortunate to bump on log status.

Man’s first need is God.
Man’s second need is each other.
Man’s third need is what God has entrusted to him.

Hence, we are called to love God as a wife loves her lord, we are called to love each other as much as a lord loves his wife, and we are called to be stewards of God’s creations and creatures. And who is a better lord to imitate and to love than the Lord Himself? And who better to show us how to treat nature than He who patiently, skillfully, and lovingly created all things in order and in wisdom for us men and for our greater good?

The lack of repsonse to this thread makes leaving the church or becoming a hermit start looking all the better to me. Shame shame. Even if I got disagreement at least someone cares. You all just continue to feed your bellies, stock your pantry, and whatever else you do. Your day is coming. Maybe our society is further gone than I originally thought.

Actually, I totally agree with you, and it is one of the reasons that I am against the way we “do charity” in this country. The government takes so much of our money and we assume everyone is being taken care of because “we gave at the office.” We are also so busy with everyone working that people don’t have time to help others person to person.

I myself have a little volunteer work that I do, but it is really hard for me to do more even tho I see that there are so many people out there who could really use some *company. *And there are those who if they had a friend to talk with would be able to benefit from getting advice from that person instead of being mandated to go to government programs.

I know a lady on welfare and she said her main problem was that she really didn’t know how to cook, so her money/food stamps didn’t go that far because she didn’t know how to handle it.

There are so many needs, but we assume they are all being met. When we give the government money for the poor, only 1 out of 3 dollars actually gets to a poor person; the rest goes to maintain the bureaucracy.

And I am totally with you on the intellectual stimulation, altho I know at times I go overboard.

Well said. We always assume that those whose physical needs are not being met are the only needy out there. And in order to satisfy those needs our society is all to willing to dismiss those with less visible needs and even make their condiiton worse treating them as nothing more than a source of revenue to be exploited.
