I have a chromatic tuner app on my iPhone, which I use for my guitar. I’m thinking about using it to tune our piano.

I remember being told years ago that the tuner’s ear was important. However, there weren’t any apps at that time, only the tuning fork. As I understand it, the piano tuner would tune one note, then use his ear to tune the rest.

Has anyone used a chromatic tuner app to tune a piano?

I’m too much of a novice to even qualify as an amateur violinist, but I do hear things, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I’ve never heard of pianos being tuned with an app. It is my understanding that you hire an actual piano tuner to tune the piano. The way a piano operates is way more complex in my opinion than our string instruments, so I’d stick with hiring someone and not take a chance with the app or my know-how.

Oh, I agree with Fauken. I’d probably not use an app. I’d invest in a $40-50 dollar digital or analog chromatic tuner. They probably cost less than that, actually.
