Picking a Blog Name

Hey CAF!

So, I was thinking of starting a blog in a few months to coincide with the beginning of the Year of Faith that the Holy Father has declared. But I am having some trouble picking a blog name! I believe there is a Canon in Canon Law that says you can’t call something “Catholic” without ecclesial permission, so since that likely is true for blogs as well that really limits name selection!

The blog probably wouldn’t be solely religious, but would have Catholicism as a central spiritual/ slightly apologetic focus with other social commentary every now and then.

Any suggestions? !

If there is such a prohibition, I don’t think anyone is running around enforcing it in Blogland.

The possibilities are pretty endless. A patron saint’s name. Something from a favorite Bible verse… I call mine “Crooked Lines” based on Isaiah 42:16 and the fact that I have seen God write straight with crooked lines in my own life". Virtues…or struggles. “Seek and Surrender” is another of mine. There is a priest who calls his “Servant and Steward”. Something in Latin usually says “I am Catholic” without using the word “Catholic”. Something related to the common journey we are on…“Rambling Follower” is another friend of mine. “Never Give Up” is another…

Can. 216 Since they participate in the mission of the Church, all the Christian faithful have the right to promote or sustain apostolic action even by their own undertakings, according to their own state and condition. Nevertheless, no undertaking is to claim the name Catholic without the consent of competent ecclesiastical authority.

If you’re going for the Year of Faith, I would read Porta Fidei and highlight any phrases that jump out at you. Find one that is brief but memorable.

I highly doubt that Canon 216 applies to blogs. I know I didn’t get ecclesial permission for “Average Joe Catholic”. I somehow doubt that all those Catholic bloggers got permission to use the word “Catholic” in their blogs (Catholic and Enjoying It, Bad Catholic, Aggie Catholic, etc.). If I were a bishop, I don’t think I’d be giving out permission to individual bloggers to use the word “Catholic” thereby leaving myself open to being construed as endorsing their every opinion. But if you want to avoid using the word Catholic, you certainly can.

In flipping through Porta Fidei, I saw the phrase “continuous crescendo.” That would make a great blog title, except it’s tricky to spell.

…also, by the fact that I work indirectly for NASA has me trying to work “rocket science” into a name lol

I was thinking of changing my blogs name to something with the word 'Catholic in it but now I don’t think I will. At present, it is called In the Footsteps of St. Patrick
( inthefootstepsofstpatrick.blogspot.ie/ ) but perhaps may change it to ‘In the Footsteps of Christ’ instead. It is predominantly focused on Irish Catholic news but also features the UK as well. I felt something was needed to highlight the many good Catholic Apostolates in Ireland that are there and that all is not bad for the Church in Ireland on the ground. It is difficult to get the blog out there as it were but there are more people coming to view it but there is little feedback, but perhaps that’s just the way it is. If it helps even one person to come closer to Christ that’s all that matters…
