I need some help with a roommate issue. My roommate is having an extremely hard time with using the pill. She has a medical condition were her body produces too much testosterone so she takes medicine for that but she also has to take the pill to regulate her estrogen so it doesn’t affect the testosterone medicine. Here is the problem. She finally got the doctor to agree to let he atleast try life with out the pill so for the last 2 months she has been off of it. The doctor has just told her that she doesn’t like her test results and said they will try one more medicine and if that doesn’t work then she will have to get back on the pill and most likely for life! This is very disturbing to my roommate because she and her boyfriend are starting to move into the engagement phase of their relationship. She is thinking that she doesn’t want to get married because she believes that it is wrong and possible sinful for them to get married knowing full well that every time they have sex that it would not be able to produce children and they would know that from the start of the marriage. I know that doctors don’t have the time to keep up on all of the new medicines and go with just what they know SO Does anyone know of other hormone replacements or hormone suppression out on the market so she can bring them to here doctors attention? This is causing a lot of emotional issues in our house because I don’t have the answers to give her and the priest and everyone just keeps telling her “it’s okay… the pill is for medical reasons” but she doesn’t buy that as an answer. (p.s. she has tried looking for a catholic doctor but he is a male and she can’t see male doctors)

Thank you for all your help in this matter. Please keep her in your prayers

God Bless,

Beckers,

That is a tough situation and I will definitely remember your roommate in my prayers. However, I believe her priest is correct when he says that if the pill is taken for medical reasons, it does not prohibit one from engaging in full marital relations without repercussions.

Like these people said, have your roommate read John Paul II’s *Humanae Vitae *15, where Pope JPII talks about the valid therapeutic uses of the medicine like “the Pill”. There is no need for her to feel guilt over the legitimate medical use of the pill.

God Bless.

I have a friend who has too much testosterone, and she takes hormone therapy but it is not like the pill…she was even able to get pregnant on it. I would suggest your friend talk to a different doctor. There are other options and she needs to find out what they are. The may be slightly more expensive. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

I am possibly going to have HRT as well, but I’m going to a pro-life doctor and hopefull he’ll be able to help me figure out what’s wrong with me and what my options are. I would hate to have to go on the pill because I am married and it would really scare me to think I could have a miscarriage again because of it, but I really do think there are other options nowadays, and it’s worth looking into!

Your friend should accept the Catholic teaching from Humane Vitae, which states that the pill can be used for medical reasons. There are people who post on these threads that apparently know more than the pope does, and they therefore will advise against it.

I can only assume that these people were very lucky and never had to suffer through any medical problems.

If there was a more natural method for solving these problems, it would be worth looking into, but it is not sinful for her to follow her doctor’s advice.

She should contact Dr. Hilgers at the Pope Paul VI Institute IMMEDIATELY.

JPII didn’t write Humanae Vitae. Pope Paul VI did.

Anyway, what HV15 says is this (in its entirety):
The Church, on the contrary, does not at all consider illicit the use of those therapeutic means truly necessary to cure diseases of the organism, even if an impediment to procreation, which may be foreseen, should result therefrom, provided such impediment is not, for whatever motive, directly willed.
The thing is, the pill is not mentioned. I suggest that while “an impediment to procreation” may be permissable, the pill does not qualify because of its abortifaticent nature. Perhaps a man is on a drug that renders him sterile, but the drug is “truly necessary” to retain life. I think this would be permitted. The pill, whatever the users intentions, actively kills fertilized eggs: children. This is an intrinsic evil; so how could the Church truly justify it?

I’m not trying to contradict HV15, I just don’t think it justifies the birth control pill.

Great link and idea. My mother was extremely helped by a protege of Dr. Hilgers, and they may be able to come up with an alternative therapy or regimen. Thanks and God Bless.

Good call.👍 I’ve been reading Veritatis Splendor, so I guess I have JPII on the brain.

Obviously there is interpretation involved in analyzing his statements. I was just propounding the view of the professional apologists on this site. There is a lot that goes into such situational moral reasoning, which is why contacting the Pope Paul VI Institute is a great idea.

You guys rock!!! I will give her this infomation. It is really really weighing on her so much. She feels like their marriage won’t be truely blessed because they are entering the union knowning that her body won’t be able to conceive a child not by god’s will but by their will even though it is for a medical reason. Thanks again!

GOD BLESS

I understand, and respectfully disagree with our apologists.🙂

It seems your roomate is working with your doctor to treat a true medical condition that is diagnosed with the only technology we have at the time, I think with guidance with a priest that is marrying them she can do things with a informed decision in the conscience. Ask the priest to elaborate and ask the priest what he based his decision on.

There is a complete different with a woman who gets on the Pill as a young woman for reasons such a acne or “irregular periods” that are heavily marketed in advertising. Hopefully her persuit of better treatment can be a calling for the medical community, women don’t want to be on the Pill they want answers like your roommate.
