I am new at Catholic Answers and joined because I need help answering some of my adult children’s questions or comments. I have 6 sons all married and 19 grandchildren. We all attend the same Catholic church. Recently, one tried to registere his 3 yr old for vacation Bible school and was told he was too late. We live in SC, the Bible belt, and he was immediately accepted at a Baptist church. Of course he’s angry. What do I tell him?

I am sorry that your son was told that he was too late to sign up for VBS at your church. Would you, your son or his wife be able to volunteer at your VBS? This volunteering might just open a slot for the three year old. They most likely have limited slots for that age group since they need so much attention.

If he was late in registering, perhaps they are full. It’s not like they can take an unlimited number children. It’s a really odd thing for your son to get “angry” over. Does he get angry at small things frequently, or is this unique?

I’m not sure what the Baptist church has to do with anything. Your son is a Catholic, not a Baptist.

It sounds to me like the Catholic VBS is more popular than the Baptist one. It is probably full. It’s a good idea to plan ahead with summer programs, they fill up quickly. My question is, why would a Catholic be interested in sending their child to a non-Catholic VBS? That alternative would not be an option in my home.

I can’t speak for his parish, but in our programs we need to know how many children are attending so we have time to order or prepare resources for everyone, and someone who registers at that last minute may not be accommodated if it is too late to get resources, or volunteers to care for the xtra children.

it may be your Baptist Church has more resources and volunteers, which means it would be great for your son to volunteer more and donate more to his Catholic parish (as I am sure his Baptist neighbors do at their church).

When my parish still had smaller classrooms with large population, if you were late for registration, you were late - no exception - and the priest wants to make sure the parents are responsible for their children to get registered on time.

Our diocese has rules about number of adults per number of children in a class as well. I teach high school CCD (Confirmation) and we are limited to 12 children per adult, and the number gets smaller with younger children, like 8 to one. They may need more teachers to add more. This does not take into account classroom space or materials.

I say talk to the DRE and find out if there is anything else that can be done. Help teach if need be.
