Has anyone checked out the materials at Victor Claveau’s website www.pjpiisoe.org? I downloaded three titles at random and have some reservation about two of the three. Anyone else have an opinion?

  • Well, first things first…I took a look at ‘about us’ to see who founded this organization and who served on the board:
    Clergy Associates
    Fr. Robert Altier
    Fr. Wade L. J. Menezes,
CPM, Vocations Director, The Fathers of Mercy
    Fr. William Saunders, Ph.D
    Fr. Peter M.J. Stravinskas, Ph.D., S.T.D.
I only recognize Fr. Altier, but that’s one heck of a name to have on one’s list 👍

I don’t recognize any of the other names, though.
  • Next I look for some sort of endorsement letter from Rome letting us know they are aware of this organization and approve their works.
I don’t see anything like that anywhere on the site. 🤷
  • Finally I look for an imprimatur or other ‘official’ nod from a diocese or Rome on the materials to be distributed.
I looked at a couple of the pamphlets under Apologetics (since those should definitely be ‘correct’ in their representations) and what I’ve seen is “printed with ecclesiastical approval”.
Pamphlet #300 “Particular Doctrines of The Catholic Church” doesn’t even ahve the 'printed with ecclesiastical approval". 😊

Does anyone here know where that ranks along the list of ‘authoritative representation of the faith’?

Which pamphlets did you look at which raised concerns?

First let me say that I didn’t find anything seriously wrong with the three I read. I read them critically keeping in mind the rules that Karl Keating laid down in Catholicism and Fundamentalism that all of our materials should be
  • Clear
  • Charitable
  • Cited
That said, I found #75 a little unclear in places and the season specific language shows a lack of polish. Number 196 is missing a few citations. Finally, number 15 opens with a rather harsh statement. It may be completely true in some cases but maybe not the best way to open a dialog with a fundamentalist.

Am I being overly critical?

Fr. Peter M.J. Stravinskas, Ph.D., S.T.D.
👍

Fr Stravinskas is the founder and long-time editor of *The Catholic Answer *magazine (Before OSV bought it (? or at least dumbed it down)). Very orthodox, but very intellectual (which I think puts some people off :twocents: ).

He is also the founder of the Priestly Society of the Venerable John Henry Cardinal Newman, and has a new magazine, The Catholic Response. (I have not had spare cash to lay out for a subscription, so I cannot comment on its quality, but expect it to be similar to his former magazine).

Without intending any detraction, but in interest of full disclosure, I recall there was some question of financial malfeasance on his part a year or two ago, but I do not know to what outcome if any.
